Conversations with Jasmine Barros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Barros.

Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my non-profit ” That Used To Be Me LLC” because a close friend of mine life was taken from her partner. I always wanted to tell my story about who I thought was the love of my life but turned out to be the worse part of my life. But I didn’t have the courage too.

But I know when my friend’s life was taken I had to help save someone because I wasn’t able to save her. I thought I was in love with my children’s father, I thought that what I was dealing with at the time was love. It wasn’t until he tried to take my life when I realize that this wasn’t normal. As I got older I never shared my story. One day started talking to my children’s counselor when I realized I wasn’t healed and I needed to talk to someone. I started counseling and in that moment I knew I was a voice for Woman of Domestic Violence. Today I am an advocate/ speaker for woman of domestic violence. I have held my first Domestic Violence Brunch topic: The one that got away in October 2021 for survivors and woman battling domestic violence. I help woman with group talks, finding shelters, any type of support needed to help overcome their situation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. It’s very tough speaking about domestic violence because I never thought I would live to share my story. It’s a struggle seeing woman go through this and still going through it because it’s hard to walk away. I understand why it’s hard, you think someone will change, you think it’s normal, you think it’s your fault.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently work Full time at a Hospital as an Assistant to the Nursing Department. I enjoy being able to help family’s and being in the line of duty with the Pandemic.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the Food that Baltimore has around. It’s always different restaurants to try. I dislike the amount of lives that are being taken everyday.
