Conversations with James Lopez and Zack Callahan

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Lopez and Zack Callahan.

Hi James and Zack, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We began six years ago when we met in acting studio that we both were attending. I, Jamie, was randomly making up a class and really caught notice to the raw acting skills of Zack. After class, we decided to grab a bite and just talk acting. We realized instantly that we both had a very strong passion for film. Over the next six years, we practiced scenes, wrote, and visualized ideas together, but the everyday grind of work in LA really took a hold on us. We both had successful jobs and never truly found the time to actually dedicate to all that we had wanted to. Well much like everyone else Covid came and affected many things in all our lives. For us, it gave us the time to finally come to the decision that we will never achieve what we wanted in film if we continued to devote all of our time to our 9 to 5 jobs. We gave ourselves a date to stop working our jobs after the re-opening stuck to it and created Businessman Productions and haven’t looked back. So far, it has been a grind but working for ourselves everyday to reach what we both moved here for gives solace and gratitude each and every day and we wouldn’t have any other way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well to be honest, it has been a very interesting journey so far. Creating a company with only two people can be challenging on its own, but we love a good challenge. Besides that will make it feel that so much more fulfilling for us when everything comes to fruition. Some of the struggles we run into are just the business aspects of creating LLC’s but we educate ourselves everyday to ensure our success will be earned. Juggling the time to devote to both the business and our creative aspects can be challenging at times but we find ways to adhere to both. Also like many start-up businesses in the beginning there isn’t very much income, which can be disheartening at times knowing we are putting in 12 to 14 hour days six days a week with little to no return back. However, we both try to focus on what is to come in our future will all be worth our sacrifices.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
To be honest, we do just about everything which is exactly what we feel separates us from many other production companies. We specialize in screenwriting, script doctoring, cinematography, editing, acting. We take pride in delivering very professional work in a timely manner. We also film business video promotions for all types of business. Let’s just say anything to do with film we do it.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
For me, Jamie, it is very hard to single in on an exact childhood memory that was my favorite because honestly there were so many from going to Peru with my family, hitting my first home run, or the first time my dog had puppies and I got to stay home from school that day. However, I’m going to take it back to second grade when I won a writing contest and got to read my story in front of the entire school and parents. It was a breathtaking moment and was one of the first times I knew that creative arts is where I needed to be.

For me, Zack, my favorite childhood memory consisted more of a combination of going to the movies with my dad and brother on the weekends. The movies that absolutely blew my mind was the Harry Potter series. I remember watching The Sorcerers Stone after having read the book and seeing the magic of it coming to life absolutely made me fall in love with the world of filmmaking.
