Conversations with Jacob Corrales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Corrales.

Hi Jacob, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Colombia, where I studied Advertising for five years; I fell in love with photography in the first story class at my college, where I learned how to build and take photos with a black cardboard camera. In my second semester, our photography class, we focused on adverting photography and how to tell and communicate stories and feelings through pictures. I clearly remembered that for six months, we had to use our film camera every week and communicate a specific concept the teacher gave us. That was the beginning of my new journey. For several years I focused my career on graphic design but always on the side, I was doing my projects. Almost seven years ago, I moved to San Francisco. I’ve been doing product, business head shoots, elopements, portraits for yearbooks, pregnant, family sessions, editorial/fashion personal projects, and content photography. I have a beautiful clothes brand @chospi_co with my best friend and his sister; they currently live and produce the clothes in Colombia and send me the clothes here, where I create and take the photography for the collections. Now, I am working in XYZ creative production agency in San Francisco as Retouch Artist but always on the side making my love and my passion, photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m the kind of person who thinks that every single experience of life is worth it; moving here and starting a new life far from the people you love and from your country would always be a complex challenge, but all this was worth it. I’m in love with the city, people, my work, and my friends, and challenging me to do and learn new things is a grateful journey full of beautiful stories to add to my journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Graphic Designer, Photographer, and Retouch Artist. I worked for a small famous theater in Medellin Colombia as a creative and graphic designer for three years; during this time I changed the visual of the theater; we wanted to show viewers a fresh and renewed image of theater posters. I had to take the photography retouched it and created the design for all plays presented in the theater. I enjoyed this magic experience in this theater. I feel confident with my sharp eye and my good taste to create from scratch a beautiful visual photography

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
All my best memories are of my grandmother’s house on my father’s side. It was a beautiful farm on the countryside, surrounded by only nature, where my cousins and I used to play and learn from nature the whole day
