Conversations with Hope Goins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Goins.

Hope, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Staff Director for a powerful Congressional Committee, published author, and lawyer. Born and raised in Grenada, MS. Graduate of Tougaloo College and the University of Arkansas. Enjoys traveling the world, history, museums, and reading.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Day to day, I am involved in decisions at the highest levels of the government. I have written and negotiated legislation that keeps the most powerful nation in the world safe, secure, and resilient. For the most part, I impact millions of people, an overwhelming majority of whom I will never meet and will never know my name. I know that my career is influential and powerful, and that means I have to leverage it from beyond a desk. It is not lost on me that there are very few people in my position that look like me or share my background, but I have no desire to be the only one or one of few. Aside from working for the people through legislative and oversight efforts, I do my part to create a pipeline for more public policy professionals. I spend a good amount of time mentoring, telling my story, and encouraging more and more people to get involved in some sort of capacity. Also, seeing that there is a lack of civics education and understanding of how our government works, I am currently working on initiatives that seek to renew our sense of democracy throughout the nation. One way that I’m doing this is through my debut children’s book The Adventures of Chloe and Chris: The Three Branches of Government.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m most happy and at peace when I’m surrounded by pretty things and scenery. I love being near the water and soaking in nature. I also enjoy time with my family and my friends. I love the arts and catch live performances often. I also get great joy when I see those I’ve mentored or advised become successful.
