Conversations with Ericka Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Sanchez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico and moved to Texas at the age of eight. I have now been living in California for 20 years. I started my blog Nibbles and Feasts 11 years ago as a way to catalog my mother’s and grandmother’s recipes. The blog evolved into a business and I have now been a recipe developer and food photographer full time for nine years. The blog has led me to publishing two cookbooks: Aguas Frescas & Paletas and !Buen Provecho!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has had its ups and downs. There has been a lot of trial and error with technology and social media, as well as endless networking. Many people think that becoming your own boss happens overnight because they never learn of roadblocks along the way. You also have to put in time for yourself to rest and learn continuously.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I first began my business as a recipe developer and food photographer for food and kitchen brands. Sometimes I consult and help in their content creation for websites or social media profiles. Now, I’ve published two cookbooks that contain my most cherished recipes I grew up with. I think my style of using authentic Mexican ingredients and techniques helps me set myself apart from others. Also, I like to keep my photography style vibrant but timeless to be shared time and time again.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find someone that you look up to and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Better yet, find out if you can assist them or watch the work. I learned so many photo and food styling tricks by assisting photographers and food stylists.
