Conversations with Christine Li

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Li.

Hi Christine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I have always considered myself a creative person, taking interests in classical literature, writing, filmography, and of course, photography. Growing up in an Asian household, I have also felt torn between pursuing a practical career and one that was more aligned with my passions, which ultimately shaped the path that led me to where I am today. I studied English at UCLA, took a few film classes post-graduation, and self-published a romantic poetry book. In between, I worked in various office jobs (insurance, marketing, recruiting, etc.). However, at the end of the day, photography was one passion that I continued to return to, after it had all with all started with a Sony Cyber-shot that my parents gifted me with when I was in high school, thus allowing me to document my travels and capture countless wonderful memories.

My passion grew even more when my boyfriend at the time, now husband, gifted me a Canon entry-level DSLR, which allowed me to shoot a few portrait sessions and even second shoot my first wedding. The support and feedback from family, friends and clients soon encouraged me to take my skills and passion for capturing beautiful memories to a professional level, and since then, I have had the opportunity to shoot many weddings and connect with amazing photographers and wedding industry professionals both locally in SoCal and across the US. I continue to look forward to ways to hone my craft so I can capture special moments in people’s lives in the many beautiful places of this world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The journey to get where I am today has not been the smoothest. I wrestled with myself countless times on whether to honor my parents’ values and pursue a practical, secure job or taking a risk at something that I am truly passionate about. After many attempts at practicality, I decided that the freedom to pursue my passions exceeded the comfort of financial security. It was even more of a struggle when I did not have a group of people who supported my desire for my creative passions, but thankfully, as my skills developed and I met more like-minded people, my confidence that photography is I want to do in life propelled me forward. It is true what people say — you cannot get far on this journey alone as much as you can with a supportive community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a romantic, film-inspired wedding and portrait photographer, I specialize in creating imagery that inspires love, joy, and beauty. As I continue to build my business in what can be considered an oversaturated market, I find that what distinguishes one photographer from another is not sheer talent nor skill, nor equipment — but an attitude of professionalism, prioritizing client service and experience, and genuine connection with people. My focus is on telling my client’s story: whether it be a wedding or birthday party, engagement or family session, I seek to bring out the absolute best in my clients. Their best angles, best smiles, and best emotions of that day. I feel privileged to be able to capture sentimental moments in their lives that they will forever look back on and cherish. Recently, I was featured on Glamour and Grace and The White Wren (wedding blogs). As I grow in my business, the recognition I receive from other professionals affirms that I am on the right path, especially on days when I second guess myself, because the joys of being able to do what you love and love what you do is a huge privilege that I am so, so grateful for.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am forever grateful for my parents, who despite desiring me to pursue a more practical career, still supported my decisions to study English in college (by paying for my education) and pursue a creative field, which eventually led to my pursuing full-time photography. I am also grateful for a supportive husband, who from the moment I declared my desire to turn my creative passions into a full-time pursuit, decided I was worth investing in. He also continues to help in practical ways — by researching and troubleshooting equipment, occasionally assisting by second shooting with me, and helping with culling photos from my sessions. I am also thankful for my continually growing network of photography and wedding professionals who have provided me with valuable advice, connections, and opportunities to learn and develop my craft. I would also not be who I am without my faith and a personal relationship with the Lord, who fills my life with love and opportunities to pursue a path of creative freedom and joy. All of this gratitude serves as a foundation for the work I do and the attitude I bring to all the people I get to work with and serve (and ultimately befriend). Lastly, I am extremely grateful to be able to work together with clients-turned-friends to create beautiful, lasting imagery that transcends one mere moment and carries on beyond the span of their lifetime. To all of the clients who trust me to capture their special moments, I am truly thankful and I cannot wait to create more meaningful images together.
