Conversations with Christina Avaness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Avaness.

Hi Christina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As far back as I can remember, my life has been on a spiritual path. My Grandmother was a healer and my first Shamanic teacher. She was involved in Metaphysical practices so I learned at a young age about caring for the physical body and the “Aura” or energy body. When my husband suffered from a heart attack at the age of 48, it was a call to action to reconnect and deepen. Our family chose to embrace natural healing through food and herbs to support him. After his successful recovery, friends and family wanted to learn more about our story which inspired my work as the Food Alchemist and an author. I shared about food as medicine and the healing properties of coffee from Papua New Guinea in my book “Living Beyond Organic: nutritional knowledge redefined!” I love offering nutritional guidance for those ready to take charge of their healing process, “Alchemizing recipes” (reproducing family favorites with healthy ingredients), and teaching about a whole world of information that supports a healthy lifestyle.

My knowledge deepened on a spiritual level when I met Raven. Serendipitously, she came into my life looking for coffee she could drink. She had seen a copy of my book and had called for more information. At the time, we ran our business from our home and she came to pick up her order with her husband Tomas. At first glance, she said “I am meant to tell you that your Grandmother wants you to remember who you are.” At that moment, my spiritual spark was reignited and I embarked on a decade long journey of self-discovery…studying the Wisdom Path of Mystic Shamanism, Integrative Shakti Reiki, going on pilgrimages to different power places in the world, experiencing deep meditation retreats, and learning Indigenous Shamanic practices. Now as a practicing Integrative Shakti Reiki Master, I focus on clearing and balancing the Chakra system and bringing the physical body and energy body into alignment. I feel most in harmony with my purpose when I am being of service, teaching, and inspiring others.

My company, Food Alchemy Inc., continues to produce Papua Coffee which is sourced from the pristine Papua New Guinea highlands. I have been roasting these precious beans myself for the past 14 years, infusing each one with love, peace, joy and healing wisdom. It is more than coffee – it is a powerful supplement prescribed by healers for its alkalizing and detoxification benefits. Once you try it, you will taste and feel the difference. The Papua Coffee roastery is located in Montrose, California which is North of Glendale and West of Pasadena.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At every stage of life, there are challenges and challenges start us on our healing path. Thank Heavens the first five years of my life, I had my magical Grandmother. She was a strong personality and ahead of her time. She was an advanced healer and I remember spending lots of time with her. Losing her at such a young age, I was unable to process the grief. I grew up as an only child even though I had an older sister (we are 14 years apart). She loved me, but she was a rebellious teenager and this made my life complicated and traumatic at times, depending on the phase she was going through. My father was Japanese and many years older than my mother so he died while I was still a baby and I was raised by my mother and her brother, my Nino. I actually have many fond childhood memories thanks to him. Going to the pony rides at Griffith Park, learning to play tennis, cooking pepper steak and making Waldorf salad, sushi at Horikawa in DTLA, horse races at Santa Anita, going to Mt. Baldy and playing in the snow… So grateful for my Nino!

Being half Japanese in a Hispanic neighborhood was tough because I didn’t fit in and had a mother who was older than all of my friend’s moms and I got teased a lot. I remember walking home from school and getting punched in the stomach for walking on “their side” of the street and once my tuition was stolen. There was always drama. Fortunately, my Mom loved me and believed in me! I think that my rocky beginning set the tone for perseverance and I learned how to tap into that as I grew up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am fortunate to express my creativity as a Food Alchemist, discovering new ingredients, experimenting with new recipes, and teaching about the healing properties of food. In my healing practice, I help clear and balance energy, working with the Chakra system. I work with a variety of healing tools and am able to intuit, hone in, and guide my clients to connect with their energy and support their healing process. Thanks to Raven, I was introduced to and studied deeper levels of healing: Integrative Shakti Reiki and Shamanic practices.

Thanks to my husband’s love and support, I also have developed as an entrepreneur since 2008. I have been growing my coffee business. Our small local business has had a presence online through an E-commerce website. We always dreamed of opening a cafe and now we are excited to introduce the Papua Mobile Cafe which offers a variety of vegan wraps, treats, and Functional Cold Brew!

I’m most proud of building a business that helps others – which applies both to my healing practice and our newest adventure of launching a healthy mobile cafe experience!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
My life has unfolded in Divine order leading me to where I am today. On a personal note, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is to practice self-care, to do my best, and trust that is enough. As a parent, I have learned the importance of letting go. Children grow up into young adults and sometimes it’s a struggle accepting that. Ultimately, I learned to surrender to what is…with the intention to live joyfully!
