Conversations with America Vidana

Today we’d like to introduce you to America Vidana.

Hi America, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My affinity with flowers began many, many years ago but I didn’t come to realize my true love and passion for design until recently. Growing up, my mom owned a bridal shop so I was always around the glitz and glam of weddings and events. I absolutely loved every bit of it…until I went to college. You see, I’m first-generation immigrant and felt like I had to make my parents “proud”. I became a lawyer and have practiced law for nearly a decade, but there was always something missing. Like so many of us, the pandemic forced me to look at my life and question my purpose. After attending a floral workshop, I knew I could no longer ignore my calling and decided to finally pursue my dream.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been easy at all! Mentally, I struggle with the idea of completely walking away from a career I have literally devoted my entire life to and starting all over again. I’m having to re-learn a whole new industry, skill set, and community–all while trying to make a livelihood can be overwhelming.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a floral designer, I create beautiful art with flowers! I design for weddings, events, shoots or to order.

I am just proud of myself for having the courage to do something unconventional because I know it’s right for me. I’m proud of myself for going after something that I’m passionate about, regardless of the endless obstacles, doubts and reasons NOT to go after it!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you are passionate about something, just start. Start today. Start right now. Start even though you have doubts. Start even if everyone tells you you should be doing “xyz” instead. Start even if it’s something small. And once you do, remain consistent! Don’t let the limiting beliefs of others stop you from living your most genuine self because no one is going to live your life for you!
