Conversations with Allen Morris-Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allen Morris-Smith.

Hi Allen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first started my journey as an artist in elementary school drawing pictures. It was not until I attended high school that I began to write poetry. Later that same poetry would be recited in front of people with melodic structures that motivated them to push me to record music. I’ve spent four years in college building a foundation for my music career. I moved to LA for the last term of school. After graduating, I’ve been planning performances, meet-ups and apply to jobs as a Storyboard Artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. The biggest struggle was focusing. I really had a hard time settling on one thing to do. Granted, I have a lot of talent to do many things. It’s a difference between doing everything really good and doing one thing really well. Drawing was one thing I did really well. Graphic design was one thing I did really well. Music for some time was one thing I was just good at. It was only until recently I really became able to perform really well. With multiple talents focus is pivotal to making sure I stay relevant. Once I start one thing, I have to make sure I finish another or people will forget about my progress. Me maintaining focus is one thing for sure. Especially when people hype you to be better than what you really are. Not even to mention the pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I really like to define myself as an artist all around. When it comes to creative expression, I really do whatever my brain sees fit for expressing myself at the time. Recently I had the urge to make something that really captures what it feels like to be Skvwalker. I’ve been telling everyone that when I live my life, it feels like a video game. Over time it lead me to want to create an app. I would have been on my third update as the latest iteration when viewers get the chance to read this. Outside of my app, I’m currently releasing music with my upcoming song “Ice” getting ready to be launched on to all streaming platforms. I have a performance at The Spot LA on the 25th and I look forward to all the more to come. What really makes me different from others is my way of thinking. I do not tend to separate my artistry into specific fields. Many people know how to do one thing very well. I can do multiple, and finding the best way to have all my talents come together is the goal. After that, consistency is key.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have a large group of people helping me in the back. Life is hard and there is no way around that no matter how good you may be. Putting up a fight to do what you love is what everyone is doing. The people who help me make what I want, our people who help me keep fighting for my dreams. My family, my friends, my peers from school, mentors who have cared for me along the way. I have gotten very far in life and it because I follow the directions of the people who see the best in me. One person in particular who really helped me get to where I am today is my friend and producer Ev. He was able to understand me as an artist musically before I met anyone else. That was able to grow into a relationship where we talked about more than music and give advice to each other to help with our lives all around. Ev has helped me realize what I wanted to do with music in the long term and look past the minor achievements I was able to receive in the start and it has given me tough skin for the more harder challenges ahead.
