Conversations with Sherrikka Myers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrikka Myers.

Sherrikka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Life Coach, National Speaker, Children Book Author, Creator of Lil Herbie (Anti-Bullying Mascot) and founder of Every 1 Voice Matters Inc & The Lil Herbie Series. Every 1 Voice Matters is a community outreach 501C3 nonprofit that helps kids break down communicative and social barriers such as stuttering, self-esteem and bullying to improve their quality of life. I seldom spoke to people growing up due to fear that I would expose my stuttering and be teased. It wasn’t until middle school that I realized I had to do something about it. When I was in 6th grade I had to read the morning announcements over the loudspeaker and at that time, I could barely say my name, much less read the announcements. I was petrified to say anything else, because now the entire school knew I was different. From that day on, I was determined to figure out how to get my stuttering under control.

Eventually, with a lot of patience, I learned that reading aloud helped me get my stuttering under control. I always wanted to help kids who stutter, because of how it affected my life. When I had my first grandchild named Herbert and I discovered that he stuttered too, I decided to create a program that will help him and other kids just like him. I made it my mission with Every 1 Voice Matters to help those with speech impediments know that they are not alone and that they can find their voice. I want all kids to know that it doesn’t matter what people say, always know that their voice matters just like everyone else’s.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up in a modest home, my family didn’t have the resources to send me to speech therapy or purchase the proper materials to help me, so I turned to not just reading, but reading aloud. Armed with only sheer determination to make a change, I devoted my time and energy to improve my speech. I taught myself techniques to work around my stutter and started to develop a better way to speak and communicate. It was not a smooth road for me, especially in my younger years, because I was laughed at, teased, ignored and afraid to speak. Due to some of those issues I had to deal with, I developed low self-esteem and that hindered me from becoming the best version of myself. I began to believe that my voice didn’t matter and that no matter what I said, people wouldn’t listen to me or take what I had to say seriously, because I stuttered.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of my most effective initiatives was developing a mascot for Every 1 Voice Matters. I named the mascot Lil Herbie and built a storyline around him. A stutterer himself, Herbie was at the receiving end of being teased and bullied. He found a way to improve his speech and now feels empowered to speak with confidence. I created a youtube series around Herbie, which children can watch and learn different words, build their self-esteem and the confidence they need to help them realize that stuttering is what they do, not who they are and that they are still able to fulfill their dreams. I also wrote my first children’s book from the Lil Herbie Series book collection, called Herbie’s New Home. I am on a mission to inspire children all over to better themselves and have the confidence to speak up and raise their voices. I hope that my story would inspire other children who struggle with stuttering to keep practicing and growing. I have also developed innovative measures including: (1) An online animated series where kids can learn to pronounce, spell and demonstrate new words. (2) A children’s book series with its first published book “Herbie’s New Home.” (3) A learning app, coming soon. (4) The C.L.A.S.S. (Core Life & Academic Social Skills) School Assembly Program. Every 1 Voice Matters values being a pillar in our community through our yearly back to school events where we give away thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies and our yearly Popup Santa Christmas Giveaway where we surprise ten to 20 families with Christmas gifts and much more community events.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing about me that people may not know, is that I still read daily. Reading aloud is what helped me get my stuttering under control and I started during that in middle school and I still do that to this day.
