Today we’d like to introduce you to Portia Lockett.
Hi Portia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From my early childhood years, I always wanted to teach. As a young girl, I was always a part of the Future Teachers Club. My desire to teach lead me to my college days of majoring in Early Childhood education. I taught in the Detroit School system for approximately five years. My creativity as a teacher in this particular system didn’t quite mesh at the time, so I moved on. My cousin who was a general manager at a local radio station in Chicago told me teachers made great salespeople. So with that, my journey in radio advertising sales began. It was quite successful and I always found myself training all the newbies. Being in this industry, it allowed me to venture out and use a lot of my creative juices; writing commercials and doing voice-overs.
Still feeling an emptiness, I was missing my calling to teach. I decided to go back to school and become a master trainer. This opened doors for me to start my first business, Success Patterns. Of course I failed, I had no clue on how to run a business. Thank God I didn’t quit my day job. I was determined to intertwine training/teaching back into my life. I was led to Daimler Chrysler by a dear friend which opened the doors for me as corporate trainer. Speaking in front of others was never an issue for me. As long as I can remember, I was always the mistress of ceremonies, fashion show commentator, facilitating small and large group conversations. Referrals have continued to be my best friend for the majority of my speaking gigs, Combining Inspirational Speaking and training together was a no brainer. Later to add n my spiritual component as a Chaplain/Spiritual Advisor focusing on supporting individuals from the womb to the tomb. Working as a hospital chaplain and traveling as an International Speaker/trainer has brought me pure joy.
Now I can say: I am known as the encourager and I am on a mission to help as many people as possible reach their true calling by motivating them into their next level of greatness.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not always been smooth. Two major things stick out for me. When the recession hit in 2008/2009, it forced us on a downward spiral. All the money that I had saved in my 401k and other investments were completely gone. Another struggle that I faced was when I hired a person to work on a project and discovered that she was pushing products and her business while working for my company. But I will say, the good has always outweighed the bad.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Speaker, Author, Trainer and Spiritual Advisor. My focus is on self-care and professional development. I tend to create opportunities for high levels of interaction that create conversations as opposed to being just a stand-up speaker giving out tons of info. I want to make sure each time I speak, I leave the audience yearning for a tad more. I am most proud of the opportunities that I’ve had to speak abroad. and experience the lifestyles of other cultures.
My wit, my energy, creativity and ability to communicate to any group of people from the suites to the streets and anyone in between distinguishes me from most speakers. The Dr Portia Lockett experience is like non other.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when all of my cousins and I would get together on Friday nights and play while my mother and her sisters (The Rhodes Sisters) rehearsed for an upcoming gospel concert at one of the local churches in the Motown city of Detroit.
