Conversations with Ornella Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ornella Curry.

Hi Ornella, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In the middle of my career in Human Resources (HR), an opportunity to diversify or enhance an interesting skill opened up as part of a retention program in the company I was working for back in 2008. I enrolled to a professional make up school in the Philippines and completed the program. I went right on to doing all sorts of gigs, from runway, high fashion shoots, ads and events on the weekends. Weekends became weekdays too that I had to take days off to accommodate clients to fly or travel in different parts of the country. It became a consistent side business to push me to complete a professional hair design program and offer a one stop shop mobile make up & hair design service.

2011, I migrated to the United States to start a family. To have kids and get back in the workforce was the goal. I applied at Macy’s to be a brand ambassador/ make up artist but didn’t make the cut. It didn’t stop me from trying until I got accepted for an HR job and had kids. Life happened.

My dream never faded, having the skillset in my back pocket, I took clients on the side. Even though there were so many things going on, waiting for my citizenship, taking care of the family and being part of Corporate America, I continued to offer my service on the weekends. I built new connections, met new partners, friends and saved enough money. I purchased my domain and worked with a web designer to officially have my name.

April 2016, Brides and Brushes by Ornella Curry was launched. Since then, I continuously serve many clients in LA, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside Counties or even outside the state. From special events, photoshoots and weddings, may it be a party of 10 or 1, I take it as a privilege and opportunity to expand my experience.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Challenges is part of life, it is part of growing. When you have young kids, your dream gets to be set aside. I also had limited connections back then. It took a while for me to get back in the game, but it was never too late, the dream is always in my heart and the joy that comes with serving people never went away. I am grateful for God’s plan and His perfect timing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I established Brides and Brushes in 2016. It is a mobile bridal hair and make up service. I am a professional hair and make up artist. My work is known as natural classic chic. I only enhance the natural beauty of my clients. As they sit on my chair, I want them to have in mind not only one day but forever. Considering when they look back 20 or 50 years after their wedding, they will still recognize themselves and truly see who they are and the joy they had that day.

I offer the promise for my clients to feel special and get pampered all throughout the wedding day. I also work closely with photographers to ensure my quality of work on camera. No job is too small or too big, services can be customized to accommodate any bridal party needs with the help of my trusted partners.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Relationships with people are very important. I learned to treat my clients like family or a best friend, with respect and fully supporting them not only physically but emotionally. We have to give our best shot on the job, be the best friend they need at the moment and caring for them genuinely. To be trusted with their emotions and being part of one of the most special events in their lives is a privilege.
