Conversations with Michael Shainblum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Shainblum.

Hi Michael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been very interested in any visual art as a kid. I tried photography through a summer school darkroom and 35mm film class. Then in high school for my birthday, my parents got me my first Canon DSLR and I started taking photos every single day. I would bring it to school every day taking photos of anything I found interesting. Maybe it was the clouds overhead or even the rust on the edge of the metal gates. That obsession with taking photos never went away.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were definitely many struggles, mistakes and failures. But each one was a learning experience. The struggles had to do with many different things over the years. Some were business/marketing related and others had to do more with the creative process. It never feels good to work hard on a new project and feel like maybe the final outcome was not what you had hoped for. But oftentimes that has lead me to try harder next time and create work I am truly passionate about.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in landscape photography, city photography, timelapse video, aerial and nature filmmaking. I generally do not release work I am not proud of. I really try to put my all in every photo or video I create. It’s tough to say what works I am the most proud of. My New York timelapse piece was one that I put quite a bit of effort and time into, so I will say that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3_uxUSeZV4 I really do not think I can answer what sets me apart from others. I think each artist has their own creative mind to explore and tells their own stories. I think I am just out there trying to express my creativity and have fun.
