Conversations with Maya Gwynn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Gwynn.

Hi Maya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to a very racist and sexist college and spent most of my time depressed and feeling out of place. The only thing that comforted me and made me feel less alone was watching comedy. I became obsessed with watching old stand-up specials and studying performers. After watching the movie Bridesmaids, I said to myself “I wanna do that”. After graduating college, my mom signed me up for improv classes at Second City as my birthday present. That was already seven years ago, and I never left! Before covid, I was performing bi-weekly on the house team called “Dazl”.

In 2014, I been teaching improv for my friend Maja Watkin’s company “Zip Zap Zop”. I loved teaching and being able to spread my love of it with children. Back in February of this year, I asked Maja to dinner with the intention of telling her I wanted to start my own improv company. At the dinner, she proved to not only be an amazing friend but also a mentor and gave me the confidence and encouragement to start “The 3 Lines Collective”.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road so far with 3 Lines has not been smooth, but filled with so much gratitude, love, and support from people who matter!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The 3 Line Collective is a Los Angeles based company focused on teaching improvisation and creative writing to help children and teens better connect with the world around them. We are proud to offer classes to students of all backgrounds that bring them together for a revolutionary learning experience.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is defined by the amount of people who you have a positive impact on.
