Conversations with Lisa Carrier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Carrier.

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1985, I was studying Illustration in Art College in Ohio. I was a huge Fleetwood Mac, I contacted famed Fleetwood Mac Photographer Herbert Worthington III from the Rumours album cover…I sent him some beautiful illustrations I did of Stevie. After seeing my work, Herbie & Stevie asked to move to LA from Ohio to do Illustration work for a book she was working on. I always dreamed of moving to LA to live under the Hollywood Sign. “The poetry book got shelved, so I got a job at Fredrick’s of Hollywood.” For 13 years, I did windows and store displays for the iconic purveyor of lingerie. Eventually, Fredrick’s celebrity clientele began hiring me to do faux finishing, murals and interior design at their private residences. After I completed work for Cher, I decided to make a really elaborate, gothic candle as her Thank You gift… She ordered 25 more! I knew then I had a business. Next came Barneys NY, Neimans, Harrods….and lots of business all over Europe & the mid East. I was on my way! Candles turned into jewelry, hand-painted tapestries, gifts, lighting, pillows and more. Hand-painted & crystalized Corsets, Swarovski jewel encrusted Closets, jeweled statues and more!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not smooth at all….but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Several failed partnerships and the struggle with trial & error. But at the end of the day….overall it’s such a pleasure…I absolutely LOVE what I do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I come from a family of artists…Fine art & illustration is my background. For a very long time, I was known for my murals & home decor & styling homes for my celebrity clients. I love look of Old World European villas and could recreate that look easily using old world faux finishes, fabrics art and decor. I would then make ornate decorative pillar candles as a thank you….because in the 90’s you couldn’t find anything like that. Now I am known for my “elegance with an edge” look, creating gifts & decor using luxurious details. Our Memento Mori (Skull Collections) are the biggest sellers as is the Notre Dame Fragrance Candles. Our signature scent is created from the exact Incense they have been burning in the famed Parisian Cathedral since the 1600’s. I’ve had so many highlights in my career…from working with some amazing celebrity clients & even Royalty. From designing a line exclusively for HSN….to traveling all over Europe doing in store appearances in some of the most famous historic retailers. I feel as if I’m just getting started! Our product is made in America and I design every piece. I’m proud we have a unique eclectic brand that has survived many transformations. We love to have fun and everyday is a new exciting experience. We’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes. With Retail changing drastically….we have created a website and have been selling a lot more on the Web. I miss Department Stores. Having a very long career with amazing retailers such as Neimans & Barneys NY & Bergdorf Goodman… and doing trade shows where we can meet our stores were great highlights! I will miss those days… and hopefully when we are past Covid… Big Department Stores will slowly come back. That shopping experience will always be very special to me.
