Conversations with Laneya Christine Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laneya Christine Johnson.

Hi Laneya Christine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a 22 years old designer/model/stylist. I started sewing around 2018 after I quit my job to take care of my dad and I do still take care of him; I was going through a tough time that year, however I just stayed faithful in my own craft and trusted God. I knew I always wanted to be a designer ever since I was a little girl I was super creative designing and always making things with my hands. It was super inspiring to watch me grow in this area. A couple of years back in 2019, I started doing reworked clothes and handmade clothing, so I stepped out on faith and sold my first four sets I made and ever since then, I’ve been growing and selling so many pieces I made; I am beyond grateful and thankful. I have a long ways to go but I am super happy to see my life shift from quitting my job to being my own designer and make my own clothing it’s a dream. Also another person that truly inspires me is my dad he not only inspires me but he’s my best friend when I first started designing no one believed in me but my dad always did he encourages me to be the very best person I can be. I am always #1 to him.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Designing always has its ups and downs it’s all about consistency whatever you put in is what you get out. I think struggles always build us to stretch more in any area in our everyday lives and to really achieve our goals. But as long as you trust God and be consistent. Designing is always fun for me because I love a challenge and I enjoy figuring out things to make and adding my own unique style to making clothes.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design/model/style but I mainly design my own clothes. I’ve been a designer now for about two years and it’s been a journey and I enjoy every moment just to have people enjoy/buy my pieces I make it’s a dream to me. I am the proud of who I am to be honest and just to be able to make things that I create is amazing to say the least. I am the proud of me enduring hardships and still have a kind heart despite it all; I’ve always been an optimistic person my whole life and I always see the best in everything I do and in people as well: but I am the most proud is in my own journey just to see my life and self now than a couple of years ago is amazing to see all my hard work pay off and be the best person I am today. What sets myself apart from others is really just doing my own thing and being unique in my own path. I love people but I will never follow the crowd I am a leader and not a follower I always will have high standards for myself in everything I do. I think that’s what I love about myself the most is really just doing my own things and really loving/enjoying me and who I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really look at it as luck I look at it as favor; favor from God I honestly just trust in him no matter what, but starting a business wasn’t easy either because they’re always moments where you wanna give up; you just can’t give up just don’t quit push yourself to be the best person you can be always and don’t compare yourself to others because everyone has their own path and journey everyone is special in their own way.
