Conversations with Tremaine Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tremaine Wilson.

Hi Tremaine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began working as a Doula in the birth and postpartum industry in 2018. Fell in love with the space. Felt from the get go that I had found what I truly love and connect with. I planned and created an outline of what I wanted for myself and my practice. Where I saw it all going. Today I can say in almost two years, I have created a space to not only support and assist in birth and postpartum healing but also a space of education and love.

I have established connections with resources to help aid in reducing racial and medical disparities that are occurring so heavily in the birthing space. I am having the time of my life. Each client and family I work with has its own unique story and experience and each is so special to me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey has been all but smooth. As a young adult, I found the pressure and expectation that comes with finding your path, knowing your purpose to be so overwhelming. I had so many ideas and so many talents and interests yet had no idea what I wanted to become. Once establishing who I am and what I wanted the affordability to support my dreams was yet another jump to get over. Planning and figuring out how to pay my bills working as an independent contractor, finding my clients, getting the proper training, setting my business apart of others. All of these obstacles made the result that much sweeter though. Becoming a doula is an expensive journey from the training to the certification process. It also is a space that allows you to create self-confidence. Understanding what your worth and how vital your offerings are is so key.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Full spectrum Birth and Postpartum Doula, Lactation Education Specialist, Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and postpartum healer. I work exclusively with birthing people and families to establish birthing planning, education, support, and advocacy during birthing and postnatal. I assist and educate in breastfeeding support and early childhood development as well as parental support through these stages. My job is to make the tremendously life-changing event that is a new arrival of a newborn that much easier on everyone involved while making sure everyone is heard and respected.

With these specific titles and current education, I am not a medical professional but more a support and healing specialist. I inform and consult and do not replace the role that my client’s care providers play. I am most proud of my authenticity and relationships I create with these families and children. I get to watch people become parents and children grow up. I get to see children develop and achieve. I wouldn’t rather be doing anything else. This has made me eager to become a midwife and is why I am working towards it now to expand and widen my practice. I wouldn’t say I want to set myself apart from any other practice but more so want my practice to feel like home like my clients are the most special in the world because to me, they are.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
A fellow birth worker Estevan Valdes has been my guide and confidant throughout this journey. Working together and being a wonderful backup doula. Teaching and creating space to expand our education on so many traditional practices in postpartum has been glorious to share with them. My partner is my absolute rock through this all and I don’t have the words to express. I watch him establish his dreams and make everything he wants happen and I HAD TO do the same for myself.
