Conversations with Kaien Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaien Cruz. Kaien and her team share her story with us below:

Kaien Cruz 23 year-old R&B | AfroPop Singer/Songwriter from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. She began playing guitar at the young age of eight years old. As she played guitar and sang, Kaien’s sister walked by her room discovering her talents and encouraged her to pursue them as a career. Her career jump-started when she quickly rose into the top charts with her first single, “Love Me In The Dark”, later nominated for Song of the Year at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). Rushing into the spotlight, she then had her first debut performance, opening for Justin Bieber’s ‘Purpose Tour’. Inspired and determined, Kaien found her way to Los Angeles, where she is now pursuing a career as an artist. Cruz has since released three singles, two of which will be in her upcoming EP. From singing in her bedroom to performing on stages across the globe, Cruz merges culture, music & art to inspire a more uplifted mixed generation.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Applying and being granted an Artist Visa to the United States was one of the most challenging obstacles I had to tackle in order to be able to pursue a career as an artist on a global scale. I had to get ten people in the US to vouch for me as an artist to even be able to apply for the Visa. Instagram became my best friend and I was able to network and reach out to people who were willing to take a chance on me. Making the move to the US a month before the Pandemic hit was another obstacle within itself – adjusting to a new country and lifestyle while having to navigate the challenges of COVID-19.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently an independent artist – singer/songwriter. I love writing songs acoustically on my guitar & creating different unique melodies is definitely my strong suit. I am known for fusing r&b and afropop both sonically and melodically. It comes naturally to me to blend sounds, taken that I grew up around different cultural influences that inspire the type of music I create. I am most proud of my latest EP set to drop in the next couple of weeks, as it’s the first project that will really showcase my versatility in both sound and style. What mostly sets me apart is the authentic blend of sounds in my music and art.

What are your plans for the future?
I am currently looking forward to the release of my next EP set to drop in the next couple of weeks. It is a body of work that truly explores all the different sounds that I love as an artist and I can’t wait to share it with the world!
