Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Harvey.
Vanessa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am born and raised in LA. I attended LACES for Highschool, Spelman College for Undergrad, and I received my MBA from Pepperdine University.
I’ve worked In entertainment for the past five years before following my passion and working as a makeup artist.
I’ve always loved doing makeup and realized I had a natural back for it in high school. I would do mines and all of my friends makeup for school dances. After college, I worked for the beauty brands Elizabeth Arden and Lancome. I started filming tutorials and product reviews on an Instagram page that I created dedicated to that. Recently, I have taken a leap of faith and doing what I love (makeup) full time.
I’m sure you are wondering why would someone with an MBA become a makeup artist! Well truthfully that wasn’t the original plan. However, the marketing and operational skills that I learned in grad school are helping me propel my business to the next level.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has NOT been a smooth road.
The first major struggle was me balancing going to grad school full time and having a full-time job.
The second major struggle was getting laid off from my corporate job because my company lost funding and my boyfriend and I breaking up in the same week! I felt like everything stable in my life was literally crashing and burning. It turns out it was just the universe clearing the way for me to chase my dreams.
The final struggle is an ongoing struggle. Transitioning from a set salary to being an entrepreneur and sometimes money being overflowing and other times money being scarce often causes me to doubt my path. In instances when money is scarce I have to believe in myself, trust the process, and acknowledge that I have everything I need and I always end up okay!
