Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannara Rasmussen.
Shannara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Art and being physically active have been a huuuge part of my life. I have always been a very hands-on kind of person, I love feeling the tangibility of doing, or creating something with my hands!
I started university at SDSU, my major in graphic design and advertising, and a minor study in photography. Mostly all of my projects focused around health, beauty, self-confidence, embracing “YOU”, and being & feeling your absolute best. After graduation, I worked as a professional wedding photographer and designer. I loved all the personal interactions, making connections, and being able to bring all my clients’ visions to life!
The years I spent working in that industry was amazing – to say the least; but I still felt like I wanted to do MORE, it wasn’t enough. I wanted one-on-one experiences, to bring a bigger difference in people’s lives, and to CHANGE lives! And so… I went back to school to become a paramedical esthetician and PMU artist!
I found my true passion and purpose in this awesome field. I’m able to combine my love for art, people, and health, and practice that every day! The ability to take someone’s insecurities, and turn those things into confidence and empowerment, is the biggest blessing and reward I can ever ask for.
Correcting skin issues like crazy acne, healing wounds, giving someone brows or lashes, and just being an avenue of release and relaxation… I can’t even explain the feeling. Seeing the look on my clients’ face, seeing the glow in their smile after a service or treatment, is what I live for – I don’t ever want to do anything else!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely been challenging at times. Obviously learning a new craft and technique, perfecting it, and eventually performing it on another person’s skin or body is pretty nerve-racking and stressful. It’s just part of the learning and growing process.
But if I were to give advice to others starting out, on whatever journey they are embarking, is to NOT GIVE UP – EVER!
I had, and have – nay-sayers, catty haters who tried to break me, who put me down, and who basically didn’t want to see me succeed. Unfortunately, some of them were people who I considered very close friends. It’s hard starting, building (and continuing to build) my business; trying to better my work, keep studying, furthering my knowledge in my practice. All of this, plus the frustrations, doubt, and second-guessing that come with it, it’s not easy, that’s for sure; but is anything worthwhile and exceptional, easy??
I say, all these experiences, trials, struggles, and steps, are what is going to make you AMAZING! Welcome them, and try not to doubt yourself! See them as learning tools – you can’t grow without making mistakes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into SAWR Belles story. Tell us more about the business.
Skin, skin, and more SKIN! I love working on it, with it, and anything to do with it!
I specialize in correcting/treating skin and reestablishing healthy systems inside and out! I don’t limit my treatments to just your face, I do SKIN, which includes the whole body. I try to work holistically, taking nutrition, daily activities, and lifestyles into account as we go through your revisions! I utilize a paramedical skin line called DMK, which uses Enzyme Therapy to help heal and treat conditions such as acne, pigmentation, aging, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and more. I hope to get into pre and post-operative treatments one day!
The other services I offer and love to do, are lash extensions, brow shaping and lamination, full-body wax, and permanent makeup. I also teach a Classic Lash Extension course that covers all the basics and techniques for beginners that want to learn this service. Even though skin is my emphasis, doing beautiful lash sets and custom brows is just as exciting! I get to use my art background to be creative, and basically draw on skin, enhance lashes, and make a glamorous new canvas for my clients!
I think of my clients, not just as clients, but kinda like my extended beauty family! I take my work seriously, and my treatments or services with my clients personally – if they have a setback, so do I. If they experience triumph or breakthrough, so do I. When they feel confident and beautiful, I get to feel that too! That’s what I am proud of – to be able to stay personal and close to my work and my clients when in so many cases, people in this industry become indifferent and see it just as a job.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Just get out there! Go to events, conferences, join groups, do trainings, and further your education. Be brave and bold enough to talk to people, surround yourself with others who are better and smarter than you.
You NEED to be social in any growing industry, or you might miss the chance to learn and grow!
