Conversations with the Inspiring Sarah Trott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Trott.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I imagined what my 20’s would look like, I pictured movie-worthy moments from Sex in the City and Friends. I realized life actually turns out to be more like a blooper reel… *cue horrible dates, fake friends and scary bosses.*

After dealing with a few plot twists, I threw out my impractical storyboard for life and created my podcast and brand called From Here to Where. My goal is to change the narrative for perfection and bring strong girls together through the tough sh*t we go through in this defining decade.

My goal is to be honest about my personal hardships and share those of inspiring, successful women to comfort and connect with others. My mission is to start honest conversations and hear from inspiring women on the things that aren’t easy to talk about. You know, the stuff nobody teaches you in school?!

Whether it’s talking about finances, mental health, relationships, or career uncertainty — there’s plenty of other women going through similar hardships and struggles across the world. But together we can share practical strategies and advice, AND create a network of bad ass women.

Who better to hear from on these topics than some of the most interesting, inspiring, and POWERFUL women.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I came to a major crossroads after quitting my job in TV news to become a caregiver for my father in his fight with ALS Lou Gehrig’s Disease. For as long as I can remember, this job seemed like my biggest dream and end goal.

For someone who always planned to put a career first, this was a huge decision and transition for me to make. At the same time, I struggled to find other young women going through similar difficulties. I couldn’t find many obvious resources or people my age who could relate to the issues I was going through.

As a former TV reporter and anchor my instinct is to ask questions, share stories and connect my audience in both the struggles and joys of the human condition. After stepping back and reflecting on my passions and priorities, I decided to use my journalism skills to pursue new ventures in empowering and uniting women in the struggles of this defining decade.

My biggest advice is to follow your heart and pursue your authentic passions. If you find yourself walking down a path you’re not passionate about — whether it’s a career choice, relationship, friendship, or any decision you’ve made that no longer excites you or brings you happiness — it’s never too late to make a change. Growing up, my dad always told me this classic quote, “whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.”

Also, I can’t stress it enough — networking and learning from others who are farther along than you is truly the key to success. Nobody can do it alone. There’s unlimited value in asking for advice, seeking help and learning from others who have walked down similar paths before you.

Many times we think we’re incapable of following our dreams because society or somebody tells us they’re impossible. One of my role models and favorite career coaches is Marie Forleo. She says “everything is figure-out-able.” Whether it’s finding a way to launch your business, travel the world or start a podcast, every idea and dream can be figured out. Nobody is going to hold you accountable to tackle these dreams more so than yourself.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in telling the stories of incredibly inspiring and interesting women. I launched the From Here to Where podcast with the first five episodes with a new episode dropping each week. In this podcast, I interview badass women on what they wish they knew before starting the decade of their twenties. CEOs, financial experts, a professional dancer turned senior VP of one of the largest commercial real estate companies in the world (super interesting episode), bloggers, therapists, a Forbes-ranked best-selling author, health and wellness gurus, and more. Basically hearing all the things you didn’t learn in school about sex, dating, careers, finances, ambition, networking, health, but also really serious topics like anxiety, eating disorders, sexual assault recovery, grief, loss and beyond.

I’m most proud to create a space in the digital realm that shares real stories of real women. So often we see perfectly crafted lives on social media and not enough about the honest struggles many of us go through. This podcast is a place to start a conversation and hear honest, candid, tangible advice from strong women.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Women are incredibly capable human beings. Despite the challenges women have faced throughout history, we have made significant progress to be considered equal and capable. The mindset we should apply to our lives is that any opportunity in life can be accomplished by a woman. There’s no reason to believe certain opportunities or jobs can’t be accomplished by a woman BECAUSE she’s a woman. It’s exciting to see the culture shift in “women supporting women” and “collaboration over competition” too. There’s an enormous potential for career opportunities when women support other women.
