Conversations with the Inspiring OIivia Lynes

Today we’d like to introduce you to OIivia Lynes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us OIivia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been an event planning assistant for the past four years and have done small events on my own. I knew that I always wanted to start my own business but wasn’t quite sure which avenue I would take. I am also a professional dancer and have been dancing since I was three years old. I have recently decided to combine my loves. Evelyn Events is not only a full-service planning organization, but it also has a passion project, En Evolution.

The purpose of En Evolution is to cultivate an interactive space for young, local artists of all mediums to share, perform and network. Yes, there are many open mics and showcase all over the country but the inclusivity of mine is what makes the difference. Watch a live painter in action while enjoying tasty appetizers by an up and coming catering company. Experience a space where you will hear some of your favorite hits while watching new artist perform their songs that will make you evoke emotion and get your body moving.

It is easy to get caught up in the competitiveness in the industry; with En Evolution I want people to feel appreciated.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What business do you know that has had a smooth road? None. Although it hasn’t been smooth, it is, however, how I expected it to go. Every job that I have had so far in my twenties, has taught me how I want to run my business. The creativity which I love has come easily in terms of curating an event. It’s the business aspect of it that hasn’t been smooth.

Young women, if you are unsure about what you want to do, work as many jobs as you can to discover what it is that you don’t want to do. If you have an idea of what you want to do, find jobs in the industry so that you can learn the ins and outs of what your dream may entail. Most importantly, recognize that everything isn’t for everybody. Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everybody. You have to have thick skin, learn though every experience and have a positive mindset to keep going. Consistency is the best advice I can give anyone. Once you decide the woman you want to be, stay consistent in those habits until you are that women.

What should we know about Evelyn Events? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Evelyn Events does special occasions with small details that have a lasting impact. From engagements to weddings to baby showers, etc. We also involved in the arts. En Evolution is our bi-annual event that pulls artist together to share their work and network with like-minded individuals.

August 3rd, 2019 was the first-ever En Evolution and it was more than a success. We had amazing performances, great food, and positive vibes. I am so beyond excited for the next one in January 2020. There will be artwork displayed, poets, rappers and singers.

This is more than your average open mic or showcase. We are giving a space for new catering companies, up and coming artist and a place where talent agents can find hidden gems in their back doors.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My Mother, Gabriel Union, Michelle Obama, & Beyonce.

My mother, Dean Lynes, is one of the strongest, most loving, positive sunray in everyone’s life she encounters. I hope that I exude the energy and confidence my mother does when she walks into a room. Although I did not know my grandmother, Evelyn Joyce Radcliffe, my mother says that I am like her in many ways. My middle name is Evelyn and to honor her and her creativity I have created my organization Evelyn Events. For strong women, when you want to feel special at an event call me. <3

Beyonce Knowles-Carter, Michelle Obama & Gabrielle Union are beautiful, courageous women. I know each of them may seem cliche, but honestly, I don’t care. Each of these women reminds me each and every day that I have control of my life and it is up to me to make my dream a reality.
