Conversations with the Inspiring Michelle Parks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Parks.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have a whole lot to stay about my life and how I got where I am today. Even though I’m not exactly at the top just quite yet, I’m on the right path. I’ll take it back to two years ago. In late February of 2017, I had driven across the country with my mom all the way from Indiana we drove to California. We were on a mission well I should say I was, haha. It took us about a weekend to get here. My mom and I had gotten an Airbnb for about two weeks. All I knew is that I wanted to be out here. I had no job, no definite place to stay or even any friends or family. I just knew that I was meant to be out here in LA. Of course, my mom was only staying with me for a short amount of time. Once she left, I had found a job as a catering waitress and I ended up finding a place to live well with about 16 other people. now that’s another story for another time. So, as things slowly began to fall into place, I had started to make friends. I even got a new job about three months after being out here.

In June of 2017, I began working at the Cheesecake Factory in Beverly Hills. Did you know that’s the original Cheesecake Factory? Anyways, I began working there and, of course, I wanted to make friends outside of the place I lived so I got really excited one day as I was folding napkins this guy Vincenzo came up to me and asked me if I wanted to go this girls birthday party that was happening that night. Of course, I said yes! So, I went home and went through all my clothes until I found the perfect outfit. That night, I became best friends with Nicole the birthday girl. Nicole was also good friends with Vincenzo.

So, fast forward a few months later, December 31st, 2017 New Year’s Eve, Nicole and I had gone to this bar for new years eve after the ball had dropped we had decided to head back to her place with some other people. I decided to call Vincenzo that night and told him to bring a bottle and come over. He had just gotten off of work. By this time, everyone including myself was feeling the drinks. So, usually at new year’s eve, parties people are mostly making out, playing drinking games, or eating food you know what I mean? But not I. Vincenzo and I had a long conversation that night and little did I know, that my new years was about to change.

Vincenzo had to text me a few days after new years saying “hey, I went and looked at the place” I responded “awesome” not knowing what in the world he was talking about. I later found out when he explained to me but apparently, I had already agreed to go into business with him the night of new years eve. So, I clearly could not back out. Later on, I was introduced to Anny our 3rd partner. All of us were on board with the theatre. We all spent everything we had into the theatre and I must say it was well worth it. To this day, we are still in business doing amazing things, we have wonderful clients who put on all sorts of shows. We’ve had celebrities come by to perform and to just watch shows. I have to say I’m very proud of us and to watch Skiptown Playhouse grow is amazing and I’m so proud of myself, Anny and Vincenzo.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road and I’m sure I’ll still hit bumps in the road as I continue my journey with the business as well as my own personal life. But as long as you stay focus and not give up on your dreams and what you really want, then you’re going to be just fine. The only thing stopping you from reaching your dreams is yourself. You got this!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Skiptown Playhouse story. Tell us more about the business.
Skiptown Playhouse is a theatre operated and managed by myself, Anny and Vincenzo. Three hard working professionals who love what their doing. We offer a home for people who want to express their creative side with everyone. We’re open daily. Right now we have a lot of comedians who perform at our venue. We have church every Sunday morning. People have booked our space for filming. Just recently we had Rome Flynn from how to get away murder do a photoshoot at the theatre. We just want to offer people a place where they feel like they belong a place they can call home.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I strongly believe that the world is changing and we as women are starting to take over this world! #girlpower
