Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Bradley and Vanessa Zerbe.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started with Meykuhp Theory, our makeup class business. It was discovered by a want and demand for hands-on makeup education for individuals who want to learn how to apply makeup on themselves. The idea originated when Vanessa was preparing for her wedding. Hair and makeup is an important part of the bridal party. Knowing that Vanessa has a background in makeup artistry, one of the family members asked if she could show them how to apply their own makeup.
So, she had everyone bring their own makeup bags, she had her professional kit, and they had a fun and educational makeup class with brunch essentials present! After the class was over, Vanessa was struck with inspiration and saw the potential in this business idea. She sent a survey to every attendee regarding the makeup class asking for feedback on their experience. It was a hit and so she quickly reached out to me to start the journey to create Meykuhp Theory.
Vanessa and I met through the beauty industry and both have backgrounds in makeup artistry with years of experience in retail, fashion, and bridal makeup. A key factor that shapes our artistry is the need to educate and help our clients feel confident in themselves by providing them with the resources and tools to be successful. Since the day we met, we both had the same desire to create something that helps others and builds a community. That passion drives us daily to keep growing and moving forward.
As both licensed Estheticians, we are also constantly asked about skin and how to help our clients with their skin care routines. We are always growing and we want to continue to help others. So now, we have created Skyn Theory, which encompasses everything related to skin. We are providing services like lash extensions and facials. Meykuhp Theory is one of the aspects of our Skyn Theory brand. Our business is about helping our clients feel like their best selves. So we encourage what is healthy for you.
Has it been a smooth road?
We think when it comes to creating your own business there are endless tasks to do and obstacles to overcome. Two factors that have helped us time and time again, are patience and diligence. Whether we’ve had a large obstacle to overcome or a small one, rushing through decisions to achieve an end result will most likely end in more problems. So, be patient with yourself and your decisions. As important as it is to be patient, it’s also just as important to be diligent. To make a business successful, you have to work at it. Make time for it. When you make a habit of working on your business, you will see the results of your hard work. Stress and anxiety are very real and it’s important that you set reasonable times to work and realistic goals.
Both of us are creative beings, so it’s easy to get overly excited about every detail, especially when it comes to visual ones… however, the two factors above have helped us manage our business in a way that is healthy for both ourselves and the brand. When you are happily working on something, it shows through your product.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Skyn Theory story. Tell us more about it.
At Skyn Theory, we provide facials, lash extensions, and makeup classes. We are known for our makeup classes because of our unique hands-on education. We pride ourselves with the fact that we do not try to sell makeup during our classes, but help each attendee understand what they have in their makeup bags and how to use them.
We are known for our excellent services and customer service. We truly treat each client as family and we aim to build a community of amazing individuals. We are also an inclusive brand that collaborates with local companies.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Just start. It can feel intimidating to begin a journey that doesn’t have every detail in place, but if you have a desire to start your own business then do it! We thought we have to have everything figured out and that there was perfect timing, but there isn’t. We’re so thankful to have others around us starting businesses as well because it made us realize that we can do it too. But until you start, it will stay a dream.
