Conversations with the Inspiring Mia Rae Vorburger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Rae Vorburger.

Mia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved fashion. Wearing unusual things, always loved to be daring – got made fun of at some points, but never seemed to care if it had to do with my styling choices. I’ve always liked a rocker feminine style. In middle school, I’d wear hot pink dickies with chains and loved it.

In high school, I won best dressed as a senior and went on to study at FIDM. I love to style myself, my friends, family so it was only natural that that was where my career was going to take me.

Like the saying ‘you have to kiss a few frogs before you find the one’, I felt that towards my career. I have had MANY interesting jobs and FINALLY have a career that I love & that I am excited to go to everyday.

Every job has to lead me to the next and I couldn’t be more grateful. From Nordstrom to an Industrial auctioneering company, to insurance, Alice + Olivia, & now FINALLY the RealReal, I couldn’t rave more about this company and all it has to offer not only me as an employee but the secondhand market.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road has been nothing but smooth and has involved a lot of soul searching through the course. I’ve made a lot of great connections and friends, and have also lost important relationships that meant a lot to me. I feel like it takes me a long time to make decisions because I am always worried about how it will make the other person feel, and then when it comes down to it I handle it in a way that could have been better but in the end, you have to do what’s right for you. Every experience is a time to learn and grow and there will be regrets but there will also be huge triumphs that you will be proud of.

My suggestion is to never give up on where you want to go with your LIFE, not the only career. The road doesn’t end, it goes where you choose it to go. Life is short, stick up for yourself, and most of all be proud of yourself. Life isn’t easy but there are always amazing people to help guide you and are willing to help get you where you need to go as long as you’re willing to give it your all.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work for the RealReal. The RealReal is the world’s premier online luxury consignment store. Some like to think of us as the “Uber” of Luxury Consignment.

The RealReal was founded in 2011 by Julie Wainwright who is a tech mogul herself. Her main goal is to create a sustainable fashion which is not only good for the environment but also your wallet!

The RealReal has over 8 million members worldwide and ships to over 60 countries. As part of its workforce of over 1,000 employees, the company has an in-house staff of 60+ experts including horologists, gemologists, art curators and luxury fashion authenticators who inspect items for authenticity and value.

My position is an Associate Luxury Manager. I travel to consignors houses and help them choose what to consign and how to let go of pieces they do not use. Often times, I feel like more of a therapist, but would never change anything about it. I see the most amazing pieces and meet the most amazing people.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Be kind, helpful, and always grateful. People are always willing to help, as long as your kind and grateful! Networking events are always helpful, especially living in LA.
