Conversations with the Inspiring Maria Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Lee.

Maria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been into painting and drawing. I had a vision of becoming a makeup artist working behind the dept store makeup counter when I was nine. Ended up doing graphic design out of art school. Didn’t want to sit behind a computer all day, so changed careers and did makeup at a counter in Union Square SF. Freelanced for many different artistry lines like NARS, MAC, YSL, Chanel, Armani, and Dior for several years, I also took hairstyling, character fx and special fx classes in NY and LA. I got out of retail and started my own bridal biz and branched out to different kinds of jobs. I just kept hustling and working hard to get my name out there. I’m always learning something new and trying to improve my craft. I’m expanding my biz to LA because there is so much talent there and we can all learn from each other!

Has it been a smooth road?
It was not a smooth road. There were a lot of ups and downs like a roller coaster. There were obstacles I had to overcome like learning how to deal with difficult clients, learning when to fire clients, and not being taken advantage of. You have to grow a thick skin and know your worth. Being successful in the beauty industry means working your ass off and being committed to always learning and growing. You gotta be patient and have faith and believe in yourself. Stay away from people who bring you down or are negative. Being a freelance artist is not easy but it’s so rewarding I don’t regret a thing. 🙂

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Maria Lee Makeup & Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
Maria Lee Makeup & Hair specializes in celebrities, CEOs, performers on stage, actors, models for tv, print, and commercials… as well as the everyday man or woman who just wants to look amazing for their event or wedding. We love using airbrush for durability and can cover tattoos.

We also do full on transformations with prosthetics application for Halloween as well. We basically do a little bit of everything and that’s what sets us apart. This is why we are insanely busy but we love what we do!

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I think women have great opportunities if they are confident and bold enough to explore them. Women are well positioned for any opportunity that they feel is right as long as she is strong enough to fight for it. We women have a great sense of intuition and it’s important for us to not ignore it. (All hell breaks loose when I have ignored mine!) We have to learn to listen to ourselves and figure out what’s right for us. We need to explore and work hard to gain different opportunities if we desire them.
