Conversations with the Inspiring Maria & Babbs Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria & Babbs Lopez.

Maria & Babbs, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In June of 1985, our mother immigrated to this country wearing big sunglasses and a big sun hat while riding in the passenger seat of a pickup truck and pregnant with us…dearest God! We were born in Silverlake CA and started our lives there. We went to school and learned English and were pretty shy kids. We experienced some turbulent family times and inspite of it graduated high school and went off to college with no real desire to study anything specific. We ended up in a theatre 101 class at 17 years old, almost on a dare, and never looked back. We were in a million plays for a few years at Cerritos Community College in Norwalk. We dropped out of college, not before having played the leads in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and started a theatre company with our friends. Mozaic Theatre had some successful years and eventually came to an end. At this point, we were 24 years old, we’d done traveling improv, run a successful theatre company and experienced some romantic heartbreak which led to the first webseries Maria would write, Last Summer. Our next move was improv school in Hollywood! We spent many nights a week at the iO West where we, eventually and accidentally, formed our comedy duo Animál. After many audiences, many black box theaters, and even co-teaching Improv to underprivileged youth. We moved on to create another webseries, Babbs and Maria go to Therapy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being fat women of color who are confident in themselves and don’t care what others think definitely created some stumbling blocks for us. We’ve encountered people trying to exploit our heritage, our size and not take us seriously because we’re women. We are constantly inspired by young women and gender non-conformists….the fat kids, weirdos, punk rockers, immigrants, people with different mental and physical abilities. We want them to know we think they’re cool and to not let anyone deter them from dreaming huge and following those dreams.

Tell us more about your work.
Besides years of improv, acting and writing under our belts we created and executive produced our most recent webseries, Babbs and Maria go to Therapy. It’s our favorite baby. We are bold, fearless and very proud to give a voice to fat women of color who celebrate their sexuality, heritage and worth.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Do not question or doubt yourself. You have something special that only you can offer and the world is waiting for you to thrive! So, be bold, have fun and chase your joy daily. Oh, and keep your vices in check, drink water and don’t drive your car on E….cause then you’re gonna have to push your car and cars are heavy.
