Conversations with the Inspiring Juliet Piper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliet Piper.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Juliet. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a super musical family. Both of my parents play multiple instruments, and my childhood consisted of watching my incredibly talented dad play live music on stage for a living. My grandma was also an amazing professional pianist who would sit at the piano with me when I was barely big enough to climb up onto the bench.

When I was 7, something clicked, and I became completely obsessed with songwriting. All of my playdates with my best friend Sydney for the next few years were centered around writing songs. Once I hit fifteen, I started releasing one-track recordings on Myspace Music, and a year later, I was booking shows all over LA. Over the next decade, I released 5 EPs and multiple singles independently, played tons of shows and festivals, and worked with MTV, Free People, KROQ, and KCSN among others.

I began pivoting into co-writing and songwriting professionally for other artists at the very end of 2015. It all happened very naturally. What started out as writing songs with my friends in their home studios evolved into working with hit songwriters and producers, major labels, publishers, managers, newly signed artists, legendary artists, and more. I fell completely in love with the collaborative process and the songwriting world as a whole. The community I work with is filled with some of the greatest people I’ve ever met, and I feel beyond grateful everyday that I get to pursue what I love most.

When 2020 began, the idea to serve and support beginner songwriters all over the world popped into my head, so I ran with it and developed Songwriter Support Sessions. It’s a brand new program, but it’s already been SO rewarding to guide and nurture writers who are eager to up-level their craft with valuable one on one feedback, whether they live in Downtown LA or India. It’s a really colorful season of life right now getting to do all the things I’m passionate about: being an artist, working as a songwriter, and serving the creative community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is it ever?! My 20’s have been immensely challenging physically, mentally, and emotionally, but they have definitely made me a more empathetic, resilient, and intentional person. Being at the polar opposite end of the spectrums I wanted to be on shook me to my core, and through choices I’ve made for myself with lots of support, I now strive relentlessly for a mindset of happiness, possibility, and inspiration!

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My specialty is helping people tell their stories through music, particularly with lyrics. Whether I’m working in sessions for artists or with one of my clients, it’s deeply important to me that the individual feels that their message is coming through clearly. I believe songwriting is an incredible healing modality when we are able to say what we mean. It allows us to process events in our life in a whole new way.

When I work with a client, they send me two of their songs, and I respond with valuable, implementable feedback that they can use immediately to take their song to the next level. I point out not only what could be stronger or reworked from a writer’s perspective, but everything I absolutely LOVE too, two elements I think are lacking in most critique sessions I’ve attended. This is all done in the form of a voice memo, so it feels like getting a voicemail from a best friend. It brings me SO much joy to cheer people on!

It’s a vulnerable thing to share your heart with people, but I’m happy that they know I have their back wholeheartedly.
