Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Corbett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The creative is always unfolding and I consider myself an artist in this life. Dancing with the energy of the cosmic and the body, and merging it with the feeling of Love. The journey is lifelong, but I would say my wake up into a new way of being and creating would be when I started meditating at 19. I went deep into this experience and into the attention to the mind space, and that there was more beyond the physical reality of the sensory. When I moved to Kauai, nine years ago now, that place immersed me in the world of cacao, where I am forever inspired and the sprout of heart awareness began. I also kept working with imagery and photography and this is where my cosmic layering started as well. The initial images I layered actually used photos from NASA of the nebulas, galaxies, and all those fun cosmic images. These were fused with my pie mandala creations, where I have always had a fusion of health and wellness and art coming together.
Fast forward to three years ago, this is when I started going deeper into the cacao medicine, where I began cacao ceremony. Working intentionally with this plant and her medicine. It was such a gift to dive in this way and to tune into my feeling body, through this feminine earth plant teacher. There have been many pivotal stages in my life where this plant has come in and really given me the inspiration and this presence to keep going, to keep exploring with her, and to tune into what my heart desired. Now, I feel attuned to her and have had the experience to now share this magic with others. I currently have an online course and also share private cacao circles and workshops on the west coast.
The other way I share my work is through photography. This has been part of my life since I was a teen and is a strong presence and the main work that I now do. The way I relate to my photography is as a healing art. It really goes beyond the image itself, it is a whole process of becoming and being. Self-portraiture is a part of this, and I have learned what it feels like to be vulnerable in front of the camera, not just behind it. It is an essential practice for me, that I find tunes me into the presence with my body, and where I’m at. I also share this with my Cosmic Self Sessions, where I explore this relationship to the natural world and to the self through the process of photography. It’s incredible what comes out, what fears can pop up, what joy can be experienced and expressed, it’s like a full range of emotions can be seen in this space, a full spectrum. A big part of that is feeling safe in front of the camera, and it is my mission to help others be held in this way, and to be free of conditioning and to come more into the space of the heart, with compassion for self. To be embodied and to find grace through the experience, that is what I love to share.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, life is full of challenges, and I welcome them. This is part of the growth process, and any time that you come to a place of expansion I feel this happens. It’s all about your relationship to being challenged, are you willing to move through them. The only way we can move through is by addressing what’s happening and having the courage to be in it. One of the key parts here, I believe, is to have support. Have friends, have a community, have a therapist, whatever it is you need to help you go through the process, be witnessed and loved in it. It wasn’t always easy for me to reach out, and still comes up at times, but I feel this is really how I have come to the place I am now, and how I can be an artist in the way I want to be. Find other women that support you in your journey, not just in work, not just in love, but in all the ways of your being. That is where we start to make the magic happen!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an alchemist of the heart. The work that I do comes from this space and is through the work of cacao medicine and cosmic photography. I have been through many phases in my work, and looking back there are a few moments that stand out. I have written a couple of recipe books, ‘Sweet & Raw Pie Mandalas,’ and ‘Raw Cookies.’ Those were a labor of love and such a joy to create, to touch the heart of sweetness. Then, my more recent venture in chocolate making with my company Dessert Medicine, making two chocolate bars that are out of this world called ‘Kiss of Venus’ and ‘Tantric Tea.’ They are made with all wild and organic cacao, infused with mood enhancing herbs and flowers, and fill the body with pleasure, in my experience.
In the photo work world, I feel that my Cosmic Self Sessions are really where my heart is, and I so enjoy working one on one with people in nature, and capturing a true essence of being. Going into a place of vulnerability and greeting it with a loving heart. I also have my own unique way of presenting the art with overlays of cosmic rainbows, flowers, and composites that create a kind of psychedelic feeling. I truly love sharing this work!
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
There is always a connection there, the thread of life, and how we are woven into an experience and what we invite to come through later in life. I feel growing up in a semi-rural area, where I had the space to explore nature, to be with the plants and animals, set me up for this deep connection that I have had throughout my life with nature and the cosmic realms. I was also blessed with a loving family, grateful for that.
