Conversations with the Inspiring Jocelyn Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jocelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for being a makeup artist started when I was 18 years old and landed a job being a beauty adviser. At the time I was going to school and knew this part time job would be fun for me, a year later I transferred to a free standing Sephora with the position as a beauty studio Captain, and a year after that I landed a job at MAC which at the time was my dream job. Being an artist and really starting from the bottom was always so fulfilling for me and I realized at the time while I was working at MAC that what I was going to school for was not my true passion, artistry was. After stepping down to a part time position at MAC and freelancing on my own, I decided to take the plunge and make this my career and be 100% on my own. At first it was nerve racking because everything was on me now but it was the best decision I ever made. My job does not feel like a job to me, I’m constantly around new people, places, and expanding my Artistry which is my true passion. If I never started working at Sephora, I would have never discovered my love for makeup and transforming looks for my clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My career has had many ups and downs. When first becoming a freelancer you have to take the risk of non-consistent pay and even free jobs at times so that you can start creating a word of mouth. The beginning was tough for me but all hard work always pays off. My advice would be to be consistent with reaching out and stay hungry!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Business story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a makeup artist that takes pride in my work! I would say my style of makeup would be bringing out a woman’s natural beauty and creating a fun environment with my clients. I feel that my energy sets me apart and the connection I create with every client I do makeup on. I am most proud of how far I’ve come, from working at a Sephora inside JCPenney to working with top brands and clients in LA. Whatever you put your heart into, you truly get back!

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
All the Women I work with, inspire me on a daily basis. From my team to my clients. Everyone has started from the bottom and continuously hustle to do more with their career. Being constantly around that inspires me.
