Conversations with the Inspiring Jacqueline Velasquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Velasquez.

Jacqueline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
MCLC is something that has been in the works since I was 18. I strongly believe that all things happen for a reason and have a purpose. My journey to get there was slow but full of amazing life experiences.

My journey started in college when I was a bio science major on my way to dental school. I was there for two years when I realized I had a passion for art, music, design, and anything creative. I knew I had to do something to fulfill my passion. From there, I enrolled in art school and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. I have worked in everything from sample room assistant, to operations, to production, and recently a footwear designer at YRU. All these years of experience have taught me to follow my passion and not give up.

14 years later, I started MCLC. I was at home nursing my two months old when I thought to myself, why not start a brand? I wanted to create something that my children would be proud of when they got older. After all, MCLC is my children’s initials. Everything I do is for them.

I wanted MCLC to be outspoken, make a difference, and have a purpose. MCLC is geared towards empowering mothers, women, children, and kind human beings. Something that I am very proud of is that a portion of all sales go to non-profit organizations that help the world we live in. This is something that will only get bigger as the brand grows.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest hurdle with MCLC has been finding a way to balance time. As a mother, my children come first before anything. That being said, I find myself working on the brand after everyone is asleep, which ends up being midnight -4 am. I do not sleep at all! However, MCLC has also been my self-care time and my creative outlet. I am a one-woman show. I am a mother of two, a homeschool teacher to my oldest son, a significant other, an outspoken woman and now a business owner.

Having a strong support system is important. This brand would not be possible without the love and support of my family, my hubby and my in-laws. Their support, love, and babysitting skills have been a great deal of help. I will forever be grateful!

My advice for women just starting this journey is to go for it and stick with it. It will be hard but it does pay off in the end. Seeing your visions come to life is absolutely amazing. Do not ever doubt yourself. We are strong, amazing, empowering individuals and we can do anything we set our hearts on.

What should we know about MCLC? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MCLC is known for empowering any and every type of woman. We are mostly known for our “Women Empower Women” t-shirt as well as our “Local Mama” t-shirt. We proudly carry sizes XS-4XL.

I am so proud of the movement MCLC has taken part in. As women and mothers, we are all going through different journeys. It is so important to be there for each other, even if it is just a friendship through the internet! It is beautiful to see the happiness, the struggles, and just the transparency in the women I have met thus far.

What sets MCLC apart from others is not only being part of the empowerment movement but the fact that we donate to non-profit organizations every quarter. I knew that giving back was going to be a big part of MCLC. I want the best future for my kids and hope that the company’s donations can make a positive impact. I may not be changing the world single-handedly with my brand, but I will definitely make a dent in bettering the world for future generations.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Women are amazing human beings. We have a passion and drive that is unstoppable. That being said, more and more opportunities are being opened for women to be part of anything we set our minds to. Whether it is being CEO of a company, being an entrepreneur, or a stay at home mom, we have the fortitude to make a change. All these positions take work, time, love and energy.

I have met many women from all walks of life and all have been proud of what they bring to the table. The passion that they have for everything they do is beautiful and empowering.
