Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatema Lukmanjee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Fatema. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In the Fall of 2015, I began a culinary quest into the wonderful world of baking and food styling. I would soon learn the harsh truths of expectations vs. reality when it came to Pinterest recipes. Overly filtered photos of turkey cake pops that looked like roadkill, oreo macarons that looked like deflated tires and festive gingerbread men that expanded into Michelin men; this was the reality. Despite the discouraging fails, I continued to experiment with baking techniques and different styles of photography. Finally, after almost a year of trial and error, I had done it. I had created a dish that was both aesthetic and appetizing.
I started spending more and more time perfecting my recipes, learning about food styling and producing eye catching content on my personal Instagram. This soon caught the attention of foodies on the platform which was the stepping stone that launched @TheFoodiesaur, my Instagram page dedicated to food lovers all over the world.
Fast forward to 2018, I’ve been able to meet and collaborate with countless food lovers and restaurants on multiple projects. My network has grown to include genuine friendships and long lasting partnerships. Not only that, but I have learned an outstanding amount about marketing, photography, different cuisines, food styling and so much more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with anything new, jumping into the “food blogging” world was exciting, but it did come with a few hurdles. The toughest hurdle I experienced was balancing my time. Growing an Instagram page meant constantly engaging with my audience, consistently posting high-quality content and traveling far and wide to try new restaurants. I would easily spend hours a day on just travel alone (LA traffic, y’know?). This was seriously cutting into my work and social life; I had to find a solution.
This is where I learned the art of saying “no.” I was overwhelmed with opportunities to try new restaurants and attend numerous events, but I really couldn’t attend them all. I began becoming more selective and focusing only on the things that truly interested me.
If there’s one piece of advice I’d like to share, it’s this. Don’t try to please everybody and do every little thing. If you stretch yourself too thin, you’ll only end up burning out. Focus on your vision, be honest with yourself and get comfortable with say “no.”
what should we know about @Thefoodiesaur? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Although I still enjoy making dishes in my own kitchen, my current focus is on tasting and sharing the menus of new restaurants. I’ve always been a picky eater, but becoming a foodie has helped me overcome that. My goal is to help my audience discover new foods by connecting them with exceptional eateries. I do this by photographing, sampling and posting photos as well as mini-reviews of the dishes I have enjoyed most.
As @TheFoodiesaur continues to grow as a hub to find new foods to try, I am also beginning to add a touch of travel, lifestyle and adventure highlights.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Although women face many challenges, we live in a time where opportunities are everywhere. Today, we see numerous intelligent, strong and powerful women leading their respective industries. These role models are inspiring the next generation of young girls to take action. The digital age in which we are living is a prime opportunity to leverage the internet and build thriving businesses that can impact the world.
