Conversations with the Inspiring Dawn Fantau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Fantau.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dawn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for hair began in my early teens; and I took my younger brother hostage and gave him a fabulous feathered haircut which complimented his surfer lifestyle. I then gained the likes of the neighborhood kids;not only did I cut and style but I braided and beaded Bo Derek style. I was later trained in TV makeup at CBS Television City; but chose to focus strictly on hair. I’ve been fortunate to work with many talented hairstylists in the Los Angeles area. I’ve worked for Jose Eber and Byron and Tracey Cunningham in Beverly Hills. I currently work at Salon Maxime in Beverly Hills on Rodeo Drive alongside a talented team.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any struggles or road bumps (in truth) were within me… my inability to know my strengths and believe in them. I believe it’s so important to be humble and always seek knowledge. In life and in hair there is always more than one way to accomplish an end result. Be willing to own your talent and stay open to continued education. We can never know it all. I have been willing to accept my strengths and my weaknesses as a stylist and in life. It has given me the ability to truly revel in what I do.

What should we know about your business? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a hairstylist who loves creating with my client. I listen and provide my opinion as a creative. I love to connect with the person that is sitting in my chair whether it’s just a one time exchange or ongoing. I’ve been referred to as a “ human Valium” by a client and as an “intuitive artist.” by another. I’m honored by both descriptions of Moi. I love short sassy cuts. But I do know short hair is not for everyone. My ability to listen has afforded me long-term relationships with my clients. There are several things to consider in a haircut: lifestyle, hair texture, and face shape and of course YOUR DESIRE.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Without getting deep into my childhood which was exactly that — deep! I am a survivor and experienced adversity on many levels growing up. I had the desire to go beyond my conditioning and childhood experiences which allowed me to have choices. I have had many successes in life due to letting go of limiting beliefs.
