Conversations with the Inspiring Chloe Urquhart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Urquhart.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chloe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story is a complete accident. Well… sort of.

I was doing freelance social media work as a side-gig to working a 9-5 at a marketing agency. Before I knew it, I was laid off from my agency. I had always wanted to own my own business but taking the leap to actually leave the stability of my salary, health insurance, and PTO was TERRIFYING. But getting laid off forced me to be as strong and brave as I possibly could. So, I took a negative, turned it into a positive, and started my own business.

Although getting laid off was the push I needed, I also didn’t have any capital. No funds. No investments. NO MONEY to take my biz from freelance to agency. So, I did what every millennial does… leverage social media. I was offering social media services so it seemed like a no-brainer to monetize Instagram. I have now built a 5-figure business ONLY on Instagram. Using social media, practicing the exact tactics I teach my clients has not only allowed me to succeed far beyond what I thought was possible, but it’s made it even easier for me to sell my services. It also forced me to really put myself in my client’s shoes.

Owning my own business has been everything I ever thought it would be… scary, stressful, sleepless nights, long hours. But it’s also been extremely rewarding and I couldn’t be happier that I got laid off when I did.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To start off, I didn’t have any money to take my business where I wanted too (i.e. get a website, land PR opportunities to help get the word out, paid advertisements, etc.) and I also didn’t really have time to MENTALLY prepare for this. It literally happened SO FAST. I remember the day I got laid off, I was frantically messaging and calling prospects trying to get some new clients. Someone had decided to move forward and after hanging up the phone, I’m like ok shit… now, what do I do?! I had to Google project management processes, invoicing systems, e-sign systems, etc. Not to mention had to find all FREE systems because I didn’t have any funds to invest in this business. But my advice is… it’s all possible. And Google is your best friend. The answers are ALL out there, you just have to find them. Also, I did meet some pretty amazing people through this industry on social media and they’ve helped A LOT. I would highly, highly suggest building a community of other people within similar industries so you can ask questions and feel supported. Owning your own business can feel extremely lonely at times, especially in the beginning before you have any employees.

What should we know about Hart Media? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hart Media is a full-service social media and influencer agency. We help brands and influencers develop their brand recognition, increase their brand exposure and grow their business on social media through strategic storytelling. We also help brands and influencers build meaningful and profitable relationships through collaborations and sponsorships.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
JUST GO FOR IT!!! Don’t wait for the perfect “time” because you’re going to be waiting a long time. Almost always the right time is NOW but we’re too scared to take the leap. Don’t wait for all of the “right answers” to start, just start! Had I never been laid off from my job, I probably would have never started this journey because of fear. It might be scary, but you will figure it out.
