Conversations with the Inspiring Cecilie Hammelev-Wethje

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilie Hammelev-Wethje.

Cecilie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The inspiration behind Oko Boks was a combination between being able to curate my own work-life balance and spending time on something I truly feel passionate about. Before founding Oko Boks, I had spent two years taking a master’s degree in communications and business, while caring for our newborn daughter full-time. I went on to write a thesis on mompreneurship. This was an amazing eye-opener that outlined a clear alternative to a corporate lifestyle, which, unfortunately, still lack benefits for working parents.

Has it been a smooth road?
All businesses will have challenges. That’s why it’s important to find one or more who’s willing to discuss critical business decisions, brainstorm new ideas and voice unfiltered criticism. I’m incredibly lucky to have a supporting husband, who’s always willing to listen and discuss business matters. Scheduling time to look at your business from a bigger perspective should be a top priority and something you do on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. It’s so easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities otherwise.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Oko Boks story. Tell us more about the business.
Oko Boks is a finely curated gift company. We focus on providing natural, non-toxic and organic gifts that are both beautiful and purposeful. Our neutral color palette and modern style of our gift boxes are inspired by my Scandinavian heritage. We love sourcing local goods from fellow female entrepreneurs and small family businesses. It’s such a pleasure being able to support hardworking women and share their lovely products.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My mom has taught me two valuable life lessons, which today directly influence how I conduct business. The first thing is being able to talk to all kinds of people. Knowing your audience and adjusting your behavior makes your communication much more effective. I believe it’s a key element to being successful in any job and industry.

Secondly, my mom and Scandinavian heritage have taught me to truly appreciate (beautiful) things. This has translated directly into my business, as we pride ourselves on only including items in our gift boxes that will truly bring joy, be meaningful and have a purpose for the giftee.
