Conversations with the Inspiring Britteney Scales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britteney Scales.

Britteney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am 28 years old, I was born at Kaiser Sunset and raised right in Inglewood, CA (for the most part). I am an LA girl through and through. I am an artist, worship leader, and soon-to-be digital talk show host. I am also the co-owner of a brand called “The Remnant Co.” that is increasingly evolving into a production company.

My business partner, Keana Harlow and I have been best friends since 2005. We met at Inglewood High School in a science class. I can’t quite recall how we became friends but it was certainly God ordained. In 2013, Keana and I decided that we wanted to create a line of t-shirts that would spark conversations about God. We wanted to represent our love and relationship with God in a way that was thought provoking and welcoming to EVERYONE and thus The Remnant Co. was born.

In 2016, I came up with an idea for a shirt that said: “God Vibes Only.” Keana agreed, we made the design and thus the movement that is God Vibes Only was born. We have had successfully produced two live worship events knowns as “God Vibes Only” in Van Nuys, CA. We are currently in the throes of bringing our talents to the Westside hosting our 3rd event on March 8th in Culver City, CA.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t been easy as at all. Each season, each day, brings with it its own challenges. The most challenging issue for me has comparison and self-doubt. Being a young black woman in Los Angeles and trying to “find yourself” presents a unique set of challenges. Everyone is doing everything all the time. It’s difficult to find your voice and place in a space like this. We are part of a generation that thrives on information, which most of the time is useless. I’ve sat and scrolled like many of us and compared myself to what I’ve seen. I’ve seen many of my dreams and ideas die with the scroll of my thumb. I have struggled with the idea that I am enough because I spent hours comparing my gifts and talents to others. The only way to escape this cycle is to just be, which takes courage.

Each day, I choose to live from the space: I am enough, and everything I possess is enough for me to fulfill the calling on my life. I have decided that anything I do not have (yet), is God’s business. Lately, I’ve been standing on a scripture, Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I set you apart.” This is an expression that my life is full of purpose and intention and if I focus on what I was set apart to do I won’t have time to compare myself to others. Now, I don’t express this from the position of Mastery, I haven’t mastered this. What I have done is resolved to take on each day choosing to respond to life with the belief that this is true.

For any young women just starting their journey, I think it is imperative to know who you are and why God put you here. Don’t compare your dreams to anyone else’s. If you are struggling with finding purpose, pursue what comes to you naturally, and boldly acknowledge your strengths. Know yourself and know your purpose. Know what question you were created to be the answer to. Once you know who you are, anchor yourself in this belief, and create the vision for your life. The fulfillment of your purpose is going to be guided by your vision. When you know who you are, and BELIEVE that, no-one can take that from you. Knowing your purpose creates standards in every aspect of your life. You will learn to accept nothing less than what aligns with your purpose and vision. Focus and commitment to the purpose, to the vision, will gain you success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Remnant Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
My primary focus at the moment is developing and gaining exposure for The Remnant Co. We are a brand that started with t-shirts and has expanded to live event production, charity events, and even original content. We are most known for our live event each year in March called “God Vibes Only.” The shirts have also become pretty recognizable, but there is always room for growth. I am most proud of the growth of this small idea that started in my first apartment’s living room that has become this bold statement, loving community, and platform for gifted individuals. I love that we are known as a safe haven and home for many worship leaders and believers, and lovers of fashion and style. What sets us apart is our willingness to push the limitation of an apparel line. It’s very rare that a statement piece becomes a full-blown production house. For that, I am proud and grateful.

I am also working on a mini EP “3:29” that will be released this year and also a podcast/show called “Brew With Bee” that will launch in the spring!

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe that women are the most powerful beings on the planet. “If a woman has the power to create life, she also has the power to create the life that she wants.” I am not sure who coined that phrase, but I love it! The space that we are in as a country, in media, in politics, in almost any industry has endless possibilities. Women have the opportunity to leverage the sense of community among us to create positions for ourselves. This past election, we saw so many women who were the first being elected into various roles. We can leverage this energy, women who are united can accomplish ANYTHING. I absolutely believe that.
