Conversations with the Inspiring Audrey DuBiel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey DuBiel.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Audrey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
There are people in life who wait for things to happen and then there are people who make things happen. My mother often tells the story of the day I was born where within minutes my head was up alert to everything around me and had the look of “I’m here world! Let’s do this!”

As a young child, I have always had the entrepreneur spirit and thrive on creating and exploring new things in life. My fuel and drive have always been working with people. I enjoy the work of customer service, helping, serving and problem-solving. I’ve sold cars, auto insurance, retail sales, elder care/nursing, fashion consultant and interior decorator just to mention few careers.

Over the years, I have created and dissolved several small businesses in the effort to try new things and discover where I belong. In 2006, I was invited to a purse party where these women had brought a selection of outdated cheap looking handbags and watched women buy them in multiples. I was amazed at this trend of home parties and thought to myself, I can do this, but way better.

So within a few weeks, I had found where I could buy handbags and wallets at wholesale and put the word out that I’m now hosting purse parties and would often pick up my son from elementary school with purses in the back of my car that moms would line up for to buy. It didn’t take long before I had a successful home business and also selling at a Flea market.

Then 2006, I came across a small retail brick and mortar location in Glendale that was for lease. I knew that this was the time to expand my business. So, with my son at an older age and a bit of money saved from my purse business, I opened Audrey *K Boutique.

My shop has been the greatest gift and most successful business adventure that I had and I feel I have accomplished so much in the 13 years it’s been open. The goal is to continue this journey with a grateful heart and an appreciation for my wonderful customers and give the gift of authentic customer service.

This is just a short summary of who I am. My life is full of trails and tribulations and of life lessons that at the age of 49, I focus on not what people can do for me, but what I can do for others. My small business gives me the opportunity to bring joy and confidence to women.

Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be hiccups in life and difficulties that can derail us, but staying true to who you are and focus on doing your best is the key to staying focused. There will always be people who will want to to see you fail and not succeed, this is why I advise others who are trying to start their own small business to surround themselves with close allies that will support and encourage you.

Never stay disappointed when things don’t work out. I tell fellow entrepreneurs to expect failure and mess ups because they will happen, but if you understand and accept them as life lessons, those disappoints won’t hurt as bad and hinder you from reaching your goals.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Audrey K story. Tell us more about the business.
My boutique is filled with all things cute. Our mantra is #wemasterincuteness. Everything in my shop is curated and merchandised with purpose! There’s no shelf that is housed with nothing that I have chosen myself.

My shop specializes in customer service #1! I believe customer service is a dying art and most boutiques have a bad reputation for being over priced and stuffy. I focus my skills on how to run a business along with merchandising, buying, styling and event planning. I do it all. Most creative people are limited to only their craft, however, I’m very blessed in being able to do all the tasks needed to run a small successful business.

But what I love most about my boutique is the laughter and joy that fills the space. My staff and I are fun and happy people and we’re always having a good time being silly (posting dancing videos) and enjoy the snark and humor that some of our products have. It’s often that women meet each other in my shop and become friends. It’s always a fun day at my shop!

I also have created my own clothing line that is retro inspired and made to fit the modern women. My manufacturing is all local and I produce a small run of each design so that each creation is limited in quantities offering my customers something special and not mass produced.

What sets my boutique apart from others is that it’s a friendly atmosphere, where women feel supported, encouraged and where laughing and smiles is a given. It’s more fun than work. There’s no sticker shock and we give honest styling advice because we want our customers to feel beautiful and walk out feeling happy.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
That’s a tough one because when starting a business, it seems that when you seek out advice from other like-minded business, they’re not so helpful because they see you as a threat.

As far as networking, social media is the best platform to grow your business.
