Conversations with the Inspiring Ashley Madelyn Monzon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Madelyn Monzon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley Madelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Chicago and moved to LA seven years ago for school but the plan was always to stay. I attended The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and majored in the Apparel Industry Management which is more of the business side of fashion. While in school, I worked practically full time with up to 3 or 4 jobs at a time trying to make ends meet and still barely cutting it. After graduating, I continued on with my education that honestly was quite the hassle to transfer elsewhere. I attended Santa Monica College for some classes I still needed in order to transfer, and let me tell you they also do not make that process easy. After about two years, I finally made it in order to transfer to Arizona State University. At this time, I also finally landed a corporate job doing e-commerce for Hautelook where I still work now. I was part of their online program at ASU and this past May graduated with my BA in Liberal Studies with a minor in Women and Gender studies. While still in school as if I didn’t have enough on my plate, I decided to start the online company that I had always wanted. Gold Baby came about two years ago, on my 5th year anniversary of moving to LA, but was always in a way an idea in my mind, fashion for me from a young age was something that I was very passionate about. A way to express myself freely, and to help others express themselves as well. Since my FIDM days, I have had a passion for children’s wear and is what I originally started Gold Baby with, but now by demand also includes adult tees. My path is still ongoing even though I can’t tell you where I am headed quite yet.

Has it been a smooth road?
I legitimately laughed out loud. I get this question asked often I think especially now in the days of high social media. The road has been anything but smooth. From the get-go trying to leave Chicago, everyone doubted me EVERYONE including family and friends. I was 19 leaving home for the first time not only out of my parent’s home but a whole 3000 miles away to a studio apartment with two other roommates I had never met before in a not safe or nice area whatsoever. I was working so much that my first quarter, I did horrible in all my classes because I could not figure out the balance between work, school, and even social life. Another big wake up call once you move and leave home is that not everyone was raised the way you were. I trusted and assumed everyone had the same intentions I did at first until lesson learned not once but a few times. As much as I worked, my money coming in was solely for rent, my metro pass, and food. By food, I mean mostly cup of noodles and some frozen microwavable things.

As time went by, sure things got better, but things always slip up when they’re going to well. I have had 13 roommates while in LA. When I finally got a car, it was stolen from in front of my apartment, someone asked me not too long ago, “When did you feel like you could finally breathe?” I told her honestly about six months ago.
My advice to women especially younger women is that if you want something and I mean really want something GO FOR IT! As crazy, wild, or unrealistic as it might sound or seem to others do it. But, you have to be ready and able to give it your whole heart and soul, work harder than ever before, and stay mentally strong! So many people, actually just about everyone, intentionally or not will bring your dreams down. Sometimes yes, because they think you’re crazy, but sometimes it’s out of them wanting the best for you. Don’t push them away, or even fight on it it’s not worth it. Just prove it to everyone, that’s the best way, and do not be afraid!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Gold Baby story. Tell us more about the business.
I work full-time for Hautelook where I am a Product Display Specialist. Solely being an online company, we are the last eyes before items go up on sale on the site. I love e-commerce and my strength being social media I hope to evolve into a role where I can do more of that. My job coincidentally has helped me a lot with Gold Baby, I take what I do at work an apply it to my own company. I am the founder, the website designer, the customer service rep, the social media specialist, the shipping coordinator, and everything else in between. With Gold baby, I get the liberty to make the brand fully mine and exactly what I have envisioned. I am proud of how I’ve learned as I go, and continue to stick true to my roots. I work best when under pressure and I know a lot of people say that, but it really is my forte. I started my brand at probably the most difficult time of my life, and to this day, my creativity flourishes at the most inconvenient times.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I like to listen and read things that get me completely out of my usual day to day, and make me wonder or be more open-minded. My current obsession being crime podcasts.
