Conversations with the Inspiring Angela Petrilli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Petrilli.

Angela Petrilli is a professional guitar player from Los Angeles, CA. Growing up in a musical and artistic household, Angela first picked up the guitar at the age of nine and quickly immersed herself in many styles of music. At the age of ten, Angela began playing acoustic guitar in her school choir, and at 13, began studying under established Blues guitarist Jimmy Scott.

Angela received a degree in Communication Studies from UCLA and interned at a local record company, working with artists including the Bangles, Al Jardine of the Beach Boys and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees.

In 2013, Angela founded the band, Roses & Cigarettes, with Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jenny Pagliaro. Roses & Cigarettes has shared the stage with Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Jim Lauderdale, Luther Dickinson, Marc Broussard, The Record Company, Elizabeth Cook, Amanda Shires, Striking Matches and Radney Foster among others. They released their sophomore album “Echoes and Silence” in February 2019 and songs from the album were featured in Billboard and Rolling Stone.

Angela can be seen as the host of “Petrilli Picks” on the Norman’s Rare Guitars YouTube Channel and as the featured guitarist for Fender’s “California Series Player Guitars” commercial.

Angela currently resides in Los Angeles with her many, many awesome guitars. She is sponsored with Fender, C.F. Martin, and Co, Fishman and D’addario Guitar Strings.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The music business is a tough business. There are always going to be struggles. You have to remember to follow your gut and stay focused, even when the road ahead is full of uncertainty. Regardless of the part of the journey I’m in, (because there are many highs and lows along the way,) I am always thankful. Music has been such a gift to my life and I am honored to be able to share that part of myself with others every day.

In March, I lost my Roses & Cigarettes bandmate, Jenny Pagliaro, to cancer. She was my friend, my sister, my creative partner in crime. Watching her battle this disease, all the while making dreams happen with our music was an inspiring thing to witness. She has taught me to live life unapologetically and that every dream is worth fighting for.

My advice I have to young women just starting their journey is this: Remember you are worthy of whatever you want to achieve. You have the strength in you to achieve whatever you desire. Surround yourself with good people who will be there to celebrate your successes, and who will be there with you in the trenches.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a guitarist who is a social media personality, teacher, and session guitarist. It brings me joy to inspire people to pick up an instrument and play music!

A recent accomplishment I am proud of is our latest R&C record, “Echoes and Silence.” It was a labor of love and I get so proud when I listen to it. We had an amazing team to help us make that album happen, and I am eternally grateful to everyone who helped Jenny and I bring our album to life.

Currently, I have started my own YouTube segment on the Norman’s Rare Guitars Youtube channel called ‘Petrilli Picks.’ It’s been a blast going over to visit the crew at Norm’s and getting to pick and choose some very beautiful guitars to talk about and play! Norm’s is such an amazing institution with wonderful people, and I’m honored to be part of the family there.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Remember, you are worthy of whatever you want to achieve.
