Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Huson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing hair in my hometown in upstate NY at the age of 17. I went to beauty school with the intent to get my license and move right away to NYC. I did just that and worked in the city for 12 years in the famous Serge Normant and Marie Robinson Salons.
I now live in Topanga CA with my husband and two little girls. I work at Ramirez Tran Salon in Beverly Hills.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s a long road, but a fun one. You NEVER stop learning. After over 14 years in the business, I still amaze myself each year with how much I still grow. My advice to anyone in this business is to take classes, go to color/product meetings, and never stop growing your skills. Allow yourself to be inspired and grow. Don’t EVER let your ego get too big. The moment that happens is the moment that you will start going backward.
What should we know about your business? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am known for my balayage technique and my natural, beachy, contrasty hair color. I love ribbons of color showing off the darks and lights in the hair.
I’m also known to spend a lot of time on my clients. Part of it is my OCD but the other part is just good customer service.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Our clientele is made up of mostly other women. I think we obviously have the ability to relate to each other better than men. I notice the women in my industry can more easily get a client and keep that client coming back for years. Next thing you know we are doing their sisters, friends, mothers.. and even hanging out as girlfriends after work. Those relationships become so loyal.
