Conversations with Hans Valør

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hans Valør.

Hi Hans, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, so a lot of my technique has been self-taught. I took a couple of years of painting classes while studying at the University of Colorado, but eventually finished with a degree in Architecture after much persuasion from my parents who felt I would have a better chance at making a living in with this profession. I tried the 9-5 shit at an Architecture firm in LA for about four years before deciding I didn’t have the patience for the long hours & long timelines of projects. Serendipitously in 2008, the recession hit and got laid off, and I soon decided to go back to school at The Art Center of Pasadena for extended study courses and began taking my painting, illustration, and graphic design much more seriously in 2010. So one could say my style is a fusion of all of these fields melded into one.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist is never a smooth road. It will always challenge you, especially if you are looking to make your living off of it. If you decide to commit to your art, every day is a leap of faith. It has to be something you love doing even if you know you might fail. Thats the only way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in painting, illustration, mural work, and photography.

I would say I’m proud of all of it. Every step of the process teaches me something that I can build upon.

What sets me apart from others is most likely that my style is unique. It has been a development of many other skills that I’ve gathered along the way and fused into a particular vibe, mood, language… whatever you wanna call it.

What matters most to you?
Producing work that represents a message and inspires others to look beyond the ordinary. I want my artwork to impact people in a positive way and for it to be timeless.
