Conversations with Dulcie Yamanaka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulcie Yamanaka.

Hi Dulcie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’d say that I was always really into illustrations and watching animated movies. Growing up, I would paint and draw a lot, but I never thought of diving deep into animating little illustrations. Since the beginning of quarantine, I decided that I wanted to learn how to use the Adobe software and be able to draw and animate digitally. So I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate, then After Effects. In that order. At first, it was so much to learn but as I gave myself little projects to improve my skills, I started to really gain some knowledge in this program.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creating these animations have been challenging (of course) just like anything else in life when you’re just starting out. There’s so many things for me to learn within the realm of animation. When I first started this, I never expected it to be easy. I really try to take my time with learning because I never want to learn too much at a time to the point where I get tired of it. I give myself a good amount of time to focus and practice on a new skill and then move forward with a new skill afterwards when I’m comfortable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create short animations for music artists and small businesses. I create animations for their Instagram reels, TikTok, YouTube, etc. to promote their music or product. I’m proud of how much I’ve learned with animating illustrations. It takes so much time and patience to create just one 30-second animation, so I’m really proud that more and more people are starting to gain an interest in my work.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
They can find me on Instagram @dulcieyams since most people like to message me through that.
