Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Garibay.
Hi DJ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So the journey started back in 2013 when I created my first mask for a photoshoot using a cheap plastic mask from a local crafts store and some broken glass I had laying around from a past project. The mask was so unique that people saw it and started asking if I would make them one, so I started making them for people and over time, they have evolved over and over to something new and more abstract. Now the designs and materials have changed to channel fabrics, Swarovski crystals to hand-painted neon colors.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The ride has its ups and downs. Trying to protect your hard work on making something so unique and having people steal my pics and designs and trying to reproduce them. Came to the point that they had to buy my mask in order to figure out how to copy it. Also trying to figure out a new design is really tuff, will spend a full day in downtown LA’s garment district hunting for some new materials or that one special thing I find something eye popping to make a new piece.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hard question, what set me apart from others is my creativity I think.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being myself and no one can be me but me when it comes to my style.
