Conversations with Diana Marroquin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Marroquin.

Hi Diana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Angeleno Bakes began in August of 2019 (previously named Sugar Crush). I desired sugar cookies with intricate decorations for the baby shower of my second child. Thinking it would be fun to make them on my own, I began to do research and test cookie recipes. I had not anticipated the dark shadow of overwhelming defeat as I came to the realization that I had a lot of practicing to do. In the process, however, I immediately fell in love with the artistic creativity one can explore with cookies. My husband, Werner Marroquin, is the man behind the scenes. He does all of the baking and makes the icing for me. This is a passion we both share and love. We started officially selling cookies during Thanksgiving of 2019. The amount of support we received was more than I had imagined. I am so grateful to everyone that has supported us by either ordering, sharing our work, and liking our posts on social media. I am also extremely grateful for the cookie community and the countless artists that share tips and videos of their work (which has helped me so much). Angeleno Bakes is only a year old but is continuing to grow in a way I had not expected.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When my husband and I began our sugar-laced journey, we originally saw it as a side gig. However, none of us could prepare for the microscopic terror that invaded our country in March of 2020. My husband and I lost our jobs. Not only did we lose our day jobs, but we were no longer getting cookie orders. With two small children to take care of, things were uncertain and scary. We thought our cookie business was over before it could really take off. Then in September of 2020, we began receiving more orders. Business has definitely picked up and we’re so grateful for the responses we have received. Balancing parenthood and running a small business also comes with many challenges. Due to the pandemic, our son has been receiving online schooling and he needs a parent with him for guidance. So, one parent is with our son and the other is with our one-year-old daughter. She keeps us plenty busy! Once our kids are in bed, we have time to work on cookies. On some nights, we are up until three in the morning working. Another challenge I’ve had to tackle when it comes to running a small business is the business side. I am in charge of responding to clients, marketing, accounting, and running our social media pages. There have been many times where I’ve wanted to give up, but I think of how far our business has come and how hard we’ve worked to achieve our goals. In the end, it’s worth it!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Angeleno Bakes specializes in decorated sugar cookies. Some of the cookie flavors that we offer are vanilla bean, chocolate, and cinnamon roll sugar cookies. We use a vanilla flavored royal icing to decorate the cookies. We get so many different themes from Cocomelon to Bad Bunny cookies. We’re always up for a challenge and we try our best to create something awesome for our clients. Every cookie artist has their own style and we stand out in our own way, for us it’s not about competition. As a proud Mexican-American woman, I want to uplift and encourage people to follow their passions. We’re proud of owning a small successful business that brings so much joy to people. My favorite part of cookie making is seeing the client’s face when they get their order, that moment is priceless.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We definitely learned how to stay optimistic during an uncertain time. It doesn’t help anyone if you’re so focused on the negative. The pandemic taught us to be patient and to focus our attention to perfecting our craft.
