Conversations with Deanna Nalbandian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Nalbandian.

Hi Deanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Deanna Nalbandian and I am a brand strategist and creative director in Los Angeles, CA. My journey has been bumpy but beautiful in its own unique way!

In 2015 when I was eight months pregnant with my first born, I got laid off my e-commerce job at a startup. The business was failing and the employees were no longer sustainable. I took my previous Art Center knowledge and professional expertise to overcome my fear of starting my own business. I knew no one was going to hire me right in time to give me maternity leave, so I used my love for the wedding industry to start my own invitation design company, Cordially. With no clients to start with, I made up my own events, mocked up some invitations, printed and photographed them for my Instagram page. As my business slowly grew, so did my confidence! I was able to stay at home with my son and run my own business. About three and half years later, I decided to return back to the workforce in order to be surrounded by a creative team. While maintaining my business, I was loving my new job and about a year and a half later, I got pregnant with my daughter. It seemed liked dejavu when again about eight months pregnant, I had to leave work, but this time because of the pandemic. Schools were closing and my maternity leave was beginning so I took it day by day until I was set to go back to work. I contacted my employer about transitioning back and they gave me the sad news that my position, along with many others, had to be terminated and that I would not be returning upon the completion of my leave. As my son had inspired Cordially, my daughter inspired Skye Creative – named after her middle name. Branding can make or break a business and I love using my expertise to contribute to different communities. Now more than ever people need to create an opportunity to make a “come back” after being hit with the business losses of the pandemic. I am honored to have services that could assist them in doing so and hopefully make a drastic difference in their lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest obstacles has been separating my time with my children from my time with my clients and work. It was a big decision and commitment but I finally decided to hire help so that I could be the best version of myself in both aspects of my life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am dedicated to serving small business owners looking to launch, pivot or scale their brand. For the past decade, I have specialized in marrying communication and design. I strive to develop a comprehensive visual language for each of our clients through brand strategy, identity design, digital campaigns, creative direction, and photography styling.

Since 2009, I’ve collaborated and worked with boutique firms, startups, and design-led businesses. I’ve curated and created content for individual entrepreneurs and marketing teams.

I am a member of AIGA and Hey Mama. My passion project is contributing to my community by co-hosting an annual wellness and parenting expo to create a platform that empowers career-driven mothers and female founders. I maintain my own well-being through quality time with friends and family, mentoring young leaders, art, music, and travel.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have made two investments on this journey that have helped me tremendously – business mentorship from Marie Forleo’s program and spiritual mentorship from Heidi Stevens. Marie Forleo’s advice and strategies are great for mapping out what you do, why you do it and who you do it for. Heidi Steven’s “Magnetic” program really guided me mentally, spiritually and emotionally to break my own barriers of what I thought was possible for me. It allowed me to create routines that work for my best interest, it gave me a better money mindset, it allowed me to make better connections, and it has taught me how to overcome obstacles quickly.
