Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvert Crary.
Hi Calvert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After ten years of a professional photography career, shooting for magazines like Ski and Men’s Journal, my career took a turn when my partner and I decided to open a flower business. We attended the most prestigious floral design school in NYC; FlowerSchool. At the time, there were only a few classes at the time but every little bit helped because it can be a complicated business to run.
After five or so successful years of running our own business, the owner of the school decided to pass the torch to me because she knew that our business and creative success would be a good model for others interested in becoming florists. We started by increasing the number of design programs and adding some basic business and management programs. Our program now offers an incredible assortment of programs to get young florists started.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are so many worries and problems when selling products that are among the most perishable on earth. It is these problems that make our program so successful; we address the most common struggles that face florists. One of the sayings we use is, “I don’t make mistakes because I have so much experience. And I have so much experience because I have made so many mistakes.” Finally, we have published a book titled Flower School: A Practical Guide to the Art of Flower Arranging. This book will show readers how to make professional looking flower arrangements using a few simple tips.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Being an educator is one of the most creative fields to be in. We are constantly coming up with new programs to educate and invigorate the students. Help them connect with the materials and ultimately connect with themselves. Flower School is the place for that.
