Conversations with Ashanii Azad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashanii Azad.

Hi Ashanii, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an upcoming singer/rapper/songwriter. I was born in New York City. I was always surrounded by music since I was a little girl. My family had their own traditional folk music and my family was also big fans of “Michael Jackson” “Prince” and “Stevie Wonder”, so I was always introduced and surrounded by music. While going through a rough upbringing, I used singing to cope.

It went from a little hobby to being the only thing I loved to do. I was in choirs, talent shows, girl bands and etc., it was until I turned 13 & I wanted to really make my hobby become my career and my life. I just didn’t know how to go about it but I eventually taught myself the small basics. I started when I was in this punk/metal/scene phase of my life. I was a rebel and also heavy in the drug/gang scene. I was the lead singer of my first metal band. But before we could take off, I ended up getting arrested and was looking to do 1-3 years. With God and my family by my side, I was able to leave that life and start over. I finished my outpatient legal program and went to an alternative high school. I would never forget how much they’ve helped me come to my calling. Our high school had an after school recording studio program so students who wanted to pursue music had a comfortable place to start. Our school had the students make mixtapes for everyone to listen to. It was then where I made two songs for the tape. They were a big hit to the school staff & students and they all pursued me to follow this dream. So I did, years later I ended up mostly everywhere I wanted to be and still have more to go. Stay tuned for all that is to come!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For every artist, especially females, it’s never really smooth. In my case, it was tough. but nothing I couldn’t handle. & realistically, it gets worse but its something us artist go through to build thicker skin. Nonetheless, I’ve had mostly positive reactions to my artistry. I’m sure there’s some people who were like friends to me that doesn’t like my music or support it but I wouldn’t let that hold me back. And other than that, since I moved on from my past tendencies I’ve been more focused and ready to bring more to the game. Life is always a challenging baby!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer/rapper/songwriter. I mainly focus on perfecting my craft while still working a regular job. I professionally work in the Industry. I am also a creative director, I’ve directed all my music videos and helped other artists with songwriting and creative input. I am also the CEO of my upcoming independent label. I am definitely proud to say that and also proud to say that I have gotten to where I’m at on my own without any support/handouts. What I would say that sets me apart from others is, I’m completely independent. I do everything on my own. I run my own label, manage myself & career, I style myself, direct and cast people by myself. I even came up with my label on my own. Also, another thing I’m extremely proud of and is a huge factor of me being so different is my capability to be so versatile as an artist. I make so many genres of music and adjust to so many different sounds, inevitably it makes me much different from most other artists.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always very energetic. I always was ready to hop to any opportunity whether it was something with music, being in the studio, taking pictures, having fun and meeting new people, rebellious reckless preteen/teenager things & sports. I hung around the guys more being that I was transitioning into what were my preferences, relationship-wise. I also was very tomboyish like and wasn’t your typical girly girl. I liked play fighting, wrestling my siblings because I was overall aggressive. Contradictively, I was also very shy which is crazy to me being that I’m so outgoing now. A lot of younger me definitely plays into the person I am today.
