Community Highlights: Meet Zilah Drahn of Plants & Spaces LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zilah Drahn.

Hi Zilah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Plants & Spaces almost two years ago when I was transitioning out of my last 9-5 job. I’ve always been a deep lover of plants and people. I started re-arranging my plants around the house based on their needs when I realized there was a market for interior plant design. Most plants are normally picked up from a local nursery or let’s be real… a cheap one from Trader Joes and taken home with the highest spirits. Without knowing if they have bugs, drainage or where they belong in terms of light in your home, they soon pass on to their next life. My friends were texting me non stop about what to do about their fiddle leaf figs or monstera deliciosas when I also realized….. this could be a job. I then combined the two with my knowledge of plants and my love for design!! It was the best decision I ever made, nothing makes me happier to not only see people in love with their new plants but to teach them how to care for them properly!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been an insane amount of bumps, BIG bumps along the way. I’ve found it really hard to get advice on certain aspects of the business because I don’t know ANYONE who’s doing the same thing.

As you know, we’re big fans of Plants & Spaces LA. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Plants & Spaces is an interior plant design business specializing in rare plants and rare shapes and forms.

Typically we work in three basic steps:

1. Consultation: We come to visit your space and evaluate which plants will thrive and in which locations. Post visit, we build a deck of photos and prices of our collaborative vision for your home.

2. Sourcing: We connect with our growers and find all the beauties chosen from the deck.

3. Install: Once everything has been sourced, we set a date and install everything in one go.

We work primarily with private individuals in their homes, sometimes other business’ and interior designers.

We are proud of the rare plants we find for their spaces, we keep light and ventilation in mind when sourcing and try to find a form that fits just right.

Once everything is installed, we offer a plant care service where we come to your space bi-weekly or monthly for watering, pruning, treatment and love.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Hmmm… that I am a human being and I am not perfect and that I need to give my business permission to grow at its own pace and stop expecting to be in Forbes tomorrow. Haha

  • Consultation $75-$100
  • Plant care $75 – $150 per visit
  • Repotting service $75 – $100
