Community Highlights: Meet Tatiana von Slomski of Billie Bloom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana von Slomski.

Hi Tatiana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my weekends were spent in the back of the minivan and our summers were filled with road trips. My mom would take my sister and I and all of the kids she babysat to open houses, nearby museums, arboretums and local nurseries. She filled our free time with culture, design, art and instilled a love of design that runs deep in our family. Perhaps my mom did thiswithout even realizing it as in reality, she was mostly looking for free things to do on a Saturday or Sunday with a car full of six elementary school agekids!

We had a garden that was easily the most enviable in our entire city so I quickly learned the art of having a green thumb, reading The Sunset New Western Garden book alongside my mom while we planted bulbs, dug weeds and watered diligently. I learned pattern play, the importance of the color wheel and how much beauty and success can come from planning ahead and being intentional with your planting and design choices.

After graduating from college, I chose a career in sales and despite all of my success over the years, deep down I always knew my heart was missing something. Corporate America served my left brain but I was seeking a creative outlet. A leap of faith and the support of my friends and family believing in me helped me turn a hobby into the fulfilling career I had been searching for all along.

I’ve always been sentimental so Billie Bloom was named after my father, Bill, who was taken from us too soon, and I chose Bloom in honor of my mother, who taught me my love of gardening.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Given two choices on how to view life, I am a glass overflowing type of gal and so I chose to see The Pandemic as a blessing. I started Billie Bloom in January 2020 and had a very distinct goal in mind on what I hoped to accomplish. And as the year went on, I was forced to pivot multiple times. Within months of starting the business, we had a lockdown with no end in sight. I was unable to visit clients in person so I started to dabble in virtual design. I quickly learned that while a virtual design might create a beautiful space on paper, it often lacked the emotional connection that hands on styling brings to the table. Little did I know it, but defining elements of Billie Bloom were being formed.

I also wanted to safely connect with my potential clients so I created a segment on Instagram called Billie Bloom Blueprint where I gave weekly, free design advice away every Wednesday on stories! The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and it taught me that my clients not only loved my styling but they also really appreciated learning along the way! 2020 unexpectedly allowed me to find ways to create my own path in the design world and it has worked!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Billie Bloom?
Billie Bloom specializes in interior design with an emphasis on styling. I’m known for taking a very hands on approach. You can often find me pushing the sofa from one wall to the opposite end of the room just to get the in-person visual. I believe styling is just as important as design. I have an extreme attention for detail and a deep love for all things sentimental so I often find ways to represent the client in each space that I design. When people think of Billie Bloom, they’ll think of custom upholstery, wallpaper that wows, layered details, eclectic gallery walls and spaces filled with color. Oh! And there’s always a vintage Facebook Marketplace find perfectly styled in the mix!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The best compliment comes in the form of repeat business. I’ve found that really listening to the client’s wants, mixing their personal style in with my own Billie Bloom style, as well as taking them along for the ride in the design journey is the reason why so many clients come back asking to work with me again. What matters to me most is that the client is thrilled with the result so that they eventually invite me back for another project or tell a friend!
