Community Highlights: Meet Sam Palmer of Staffing Properties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Palmer.

Hi Sam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the UK and worked in the luxury car sector for eight years before relocating to Australia, where I lived and worked for seven years at an amazing company called People2People, a talent recruitment firm. With no family around to guide me, I became sharply focused on my career aspirations and the future. I started at the bottom of the company, and within my final year at People2People, I was voted a finalist for Australian Recruiter of the year. After Australia, I decided to visit best friend, now brother-in-law, who was vacationing in Los Angeles at the time with his family, and he introduced me to my fiancée Petra Ecclestone. A year later, we decided to make L.A. our permanent home and moved in together into the “The Manor”, the 56,000 sq. ft. estate previously owned by Aaron Spelling.

For two years, I worked as the Art Gallery Director for Maddox Gallery in W. Hollywood. It was incredibly inspiring but quite challenging as I had never previously worked within the art world but greatly enjoyed it as I am such an admirer and avid collector of contemporary art. And, after some time living with my family at “The Manor”, we received the “proverbial offer we could not refuse” from a buyer and subsequently sold it in July of last year for the then California record-breaking price of $119M. Residing at “The Manor” and realizing how challenging it actually was to properly staff and care for inspired me to open my business Staffing Properties, as a concierge solution to help those in similar situations as ours curate and assemble top-performing arsenal staff at a reasonable price. I launched Staffing Properties in January of 2020, and thankfully the company has grown to service our growing clientele in LA, NYC, London and Monaco while simultaneously finding job placement for so many during the ongoing pandemic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been tremendous challenges getting my business off the ground. Timing tends to be everything, and as I launched it just a month and a half before the pandemic hit the US, and at the start of the worst economic crises since the Great Depression, there was a time when I thought, “Well… there goes that…” But luckily, I have been in the position to be able to grow my brand name and reputation, even during this global insanity, and thankfully we are doing well despite all the obstacles we have faced.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Staffing Properties is a truly consultative approach to luxury home staffing. As our clients are primarily some of the wealthiest families in the world, who require a full-time staff to maintain their estate properties, our approach is far more artisanal than that of a standard recruitment firm. We begin the process by meeting with the potential client to identify their specific needs for a well-functioning home. Once the precise requirements are determined, we organize a cost-efficient pricing strategy, begin the talent search, and present a shortlist of potential candidates who have been thoroughly vetted by our acute screening process. The goal is always to forge a synergistic team, no matter how big or small, and present the client with an optimal staff for their families and lifestyles.

Covid has obviously been a defining factor in our process, as we make sure that any team we place with a family has been both tested and quarantined for a minimum of two weeks, as well as medically trained on the proper use of P.P.E. and other safety/sanitation techniques. We also offer different divisions within the company, like Special Event Planning and Luxe “Staycationing”, which is an all-inclusive option covering the sourcing and staffing of the property, the scheduling and booking of restaurants and excursions, the arranging of hair, make-up and styling teams and much more. We will even organize for luggage and belongings to be sent in advance of client arrival so that all personal effects are sorted, steamed, and put away. This highest level of service is what our clients have come to expect from us, and we do our very best to deliver every single time.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As we recently moved our family to Monaco, I thought it important that I study and learn the language, so I have been taking French classes online and using the Duolingo App. Regarding books, I recently read 50 Cent’s “Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter”, and I was actually shocked at what a great business book it was; it might actually be the best I have ever read. During the lockdown, I started watching various Instagram Lives, and one in particular, @thesocietygroup, which focuses on LA-based real estate agents and homes really caught my attention. They asked me to participate with them in an IG Live, and that launched me hosting my own IG Lives, featuring various leaders within the Luxury sector. My hope is to take this concept and create my own podcast by next year.
